Dame Van Winkle, who is Rip's wife is one of the characters in the story ‘Rip Van Winkle’ by Washington Irvin. The story elaborates more about a woman who is frustrated about her husband's nature and how he acts. It elaborates more about family matters and the struggles that a husband-and-wife face as a couple. In this case, Dame, who is the wife, is always nagging the husband over his deeds and the manner in which he ignores his family. On the other hand, Trifles by Susan Glaspell elaborates more about Mrs. Peters, who is a sheriff's wife. She is involved in a series of temptations, including hiding the evidence of murder. She is seen as friendly and very responsible and knows how to take care of his family. According to Arora & Zhang (2021), s he nags her husband by constantly informing him that he cannot feed his family, neither can he take good care of them. Such statements make people feel bad about their reputation ( Baga, 2020) . According to Irvin, "One taste provoked another ... at length his senses were overpowered, his eyes swam in his head ... and he fell into a deep sleep." This act made Rip move to the mountains to hide and sleep for 20 years. Additionally, Dame hates the fact that Mrs. Peters helps other people at their farms. She only wants to see people suffer on their own at their farms. On the other hand, Glaspell depicts Mrs. Peters in the story Trifles as very polite and kind. She is seen to be helping Mrs. Wright to hide the evidence so that she is not imprisoned. The relationship between Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters is regarded as good and cordial. " Mrs. Peters thanks her for coming along." These words are uttered when Mrs. Peters comes to rescue Mrs. Wright. Additionally, Mrs. Peters loves pets. She is in love with her kitten, which is equally elaborated in the story. The aspects of love and relationships among the two women portray a difference in characters.

Both characters are affected by both internal and external conflicts that they have to solve. For example, the story Trifles by Susan Glaspell depicts Mrs. Peters as very keen on how she handles the case of Mrs. Wright. She hides evidence from the court so that her friend is not arrested despite being afraid to go into their home. " I could've come. I stayed away because it wasn't cheerful--and that's why I ought to have come." Mrs. Peters alludes to this statement when Mrs. Wright comes in for help. Ironically , she is a sheriff's wife who knows that laws should be obeyed ( Baga, 2020) . According to the law, the number of people who commit murder should be sentenced to many years imprisonment. As per Arora & Zhang (2021), Mrs. Peters handles these inner conflicts and decides to help her friend not be taken to jail for the crime despite knowing that it is wrong. On the other hand, in the story, Rip Van Winkle, Mrs. Dame is psychologically tortured about how her husband operates. Her husband does not help her in the house duties such as buying food and other roles a father is supposed to take. On the contrary, Verdejo (2020) argues that Rip is ready to help very many women outside her family and is very nice. "Damn, van winkle loved everyone in the town, and they all loved him in return." When he is confronted, he feels ashamed and goes to the mountains, where he spent most of his time. This depicts the inner conflicts that Mrs. Dame had with other women treated by her husband and why her husband would not perform duties in the house ( Baga, 2020) . The inner conflicts among the two characters both have cruel decisions and outcomes.
The two women both have symbolic journeys and experiences that they go through in life. For example, it isn't easy to get a woman who sees her friend suffer in a man's hands and does nothing to help them out. Verdejo (2020) argues that the same character is depicted in the story Trifles where Mrs. Hale acts. She undergoes the pain whereby her friend was being mistreated and abused by her husband. In this case, it is disappointing to have Mrs. Hale take the evidence of a murder case badly to hide them. " When I was a girl--my kitten--there was a boy took a hatchet, and before my eyes--and before I could get there--(Covers her face an instant.) If they hadn't held me back, I would have-- (Catches herself, looks upstairs, where steps are heard, falters weakly.)--hurt him." However, to sympathize with Mrs. Wright and all that she was going through, one would easily allude that Mrs. Peters was emotional and sympathized with Mrs. Wright, who was almost arrested and taken to jail. Her deed of hiding the evidence shows how emotional she felt when her friend was constantly being abused. Verdejo (2020) argues that t he same story alludes to how they must have different cases with which Mrs. Wright was beaten and harassed by her husband but wasn't reported to the police. On the other hand, according to the story Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irvin, having a husband or wife who does not take care of the family may be hurting. Verdejo (2020) argues that it is always good for both parents to take care of the family equally. According to most ideologies, men should work hard to contribute more to what the family consumes on a daily basis. Mrs. Dame's issue of having to undergo emotional torture where her husband takes care of other families while ignoring his own, is equally hurting. She tries to nag her husband over the same issue, but all does not end well ( Baga, 2020) . According to Irvin, "Poor Rip was at last reduced almost to despair; and his only alternative, to escape from the labor of the farm and clamor of his wife, was to take gun in hand and stroll away into the woods. Rip is uncommonly indolent for his part, for when he escapes to the woods, he is not only escaping his wife but also his work." When her husband is in the forests, she is equally disturbed about other successful women. This shows her level of jealousy. She is confused and emotional at the same time.
The two charters have a very good relationship among themselves. They get to have a very good background about their relationships, but Mrs. Dame destroys her relationship with her family as time goes by. On the other hand, several reactions are made from the way the two characters react emotionally. They have been made to perform various tasks, including Mrs. Peters hiding evidence while the Sheriff's wife. Despite having similar lives, the two characters have depicted their differences in their emotions, relationships, and life experiences.
