As a healthcare profession, nursing is committed to desirable outcomes for patients. It is the nursing profession’s obligation to seek and utilize best methods to deliver the best outcomes that make it grounded on evidence-based practice (EBP), which defines the effective translation of current evidence into practice. Besides, professional nursing practice adores the translation of evidence into practice because it follows the Institute of Medicine’s recommended framework for evaluating and applying scientific evidence in practical nursing issues (AACN, 2008). Also, given the capacity of EBP to synthesize effective solutions to novel problems from successful inter-professional engagements and efficient decision-making, the nursing profession holds dear the approach (Spiva, 2017). More so, the translation of evidence into practice builds the healthcare professionals’ confidence, morale and skillsets.
The BSN program provided fairly deep theoretical content to build my understanding of nursing theory, nutrition, biology, chemistry, critical thinking, social sciences etc. to equip me in readiness to apply scientific principles in practice. A good background in nursing theory enables the learner to translate abstract ideas into knowledge for use in real-world nursing scenarios (Josefina, 2017). Then we learnt the principles of qualitative and quantitative research processes in sophomore, which are the building blocks of obtaining credible evidence for used in EBP. Then by continually carrying out assignments and projects in contemporary issues such, we got first-hand exposure to the analytical and systematic application of information to address healthcare situations. Within the curriculum, we reviewed multiple scholarships works from nursing bodies and medical institutions like IoM as well as publications. Likewise, we learnt the cognitive behavioural therapy, which is an EBP technique for therapy. Furthermore, we also undertook statistics classes; whose skills we shall use in harnessing vital indicators of success from a large pool of patient data to illustrate the evidence that a particular treatment approach works.
