The current increase in cases of school shootings has triggered critical debates and arguments amongst the American citizens and the global community at large. This controversial issue has led to widespread loss of lives of productive and innocent citizens. The key disturbing question here is the primary cause of school shooting. Looking at the recent cases of student shootings, it can be presumed that there are numerous factors that lead to the occurrence of this catastrophe. First, bullying stands out as one of the major reasons students opt to take the lives of their colleagues ( Newman et al. 2008). Most teens often presume that their lives have been totally ruined by the bullies especially when put forth through social media with a greater following from fellow students. Due to subsequent agony resulting from bullying, most teens often opt to lash out by organizing attacks on the bullies and even those who may have subsequently teased them.

The next reason why students engage in school shootings is based on the relationships with teachers. Most instances make them feel that teachers are getting hard on them. Most of the times when teachers are hard to some specific students or tend to single them out unfairly, they do not often take it lightly ( Newman et al. 2008). They are engrossed with a feeling that they are wrong and unworthy in life. This kind of self-blame and internal feeling leads them to indulge in unnecessary acts of school shootings to cover up their emotional distress.
School shootings have posed greater effects on students, teachers, and the entire staff members. Somebody who witnesses directly the act of school shooting is influenced by either psychological, physical, or emotional effects. Some of the identified effects include sleeping problems, nightmares, headaches, resisting return to the school, and the stomach problems ( Newman et al. 2008). Other symptoms that have been reported include a drop in students' performance levels, changes in subsequent relationships with teachers and friends, anxiety, as well as loss of attraction to previous hobbies and activities. The overall statistics show that schools that have experienced shootings have lost their reputation, hence leading to poor intake. The victims, mainly students, have also exhibited symptoms of traumatic stress disorders.

Some individuals often think that arming teachers and the entire staff members is the key towards solving this prevalent crisis. There is a need for parents and teachers to step in and provide amicable resolutions for handling distress amongst their children.
