The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) identifies the core competencies that all nurse practitioners should demonstrate in the practice after they complete their MSN and DNP educational program. The core competencies include leadership, ethics, policy, scientific foundation, practice inquiry, independent practice, health delivery system, quality as well as technology and information literacy (Hamric et al. 2014). In this paper, I will explain how I would implement or apply the competency of scientific foundation in the clinical setting.

The competency of scientific foundation ensures that all the nurse practitioners acquire the knowledge and expertise in such medical sciences as pharmacology, foundational pathophysiology and other courses depending on their specialty (Hamric et al. 2014).As an MSN graduate, I understand that scientific foundation competencies not only include knowledge of medical sciences like pharmacology but also include an understanding of clinical guidelines, translational research as well as evidence-based research. I also understand that scientific foundation competency includes the knowledge and expertise in treating patients from diverse populations (Hamric et al. 2014).

As a nurse practitioner, I understand that the field of nursing focuses on easing patient suffering and promoting disease prevention (Nightingale, 2009). Based on this understanding, I would implement my competency of the scientific foundation by incorporating my humanistic nursing background and knowledge from disciplines like sociology to understand patients’ needs and provide care regardless of their cultural or religious affiliation.

I also understand that the roles or tasks performed by nurse practitioners are critical to the promotion of patient health. Some of these tasks include, amongst others, reviewing laboratory tests, requesting radiological procedures and carrying out physical examinations on the patients once they arrive at the hospital (Tulchinsky & Varavikova, 2009). Therefore, I would implement my scientific foundation competency by critically evaluating data obtained from medical procedures like laboratory tests and applying the data evidence to make informed decisions regarding the prescription or treatment required. I would also implement my scientific foundation competency by promoting patient outcomes through the development of new treatment approaches or procedures which are guided by research, nursing theories and my experience in the nursing practice (Hamric et al. 2014).
