Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Va. is among the top rated hospitals in the adult specialty as well as the facility's conditions and procedures. The overall rating of the hospital from the patients exceeded the state and national averages in 2009 ( McCarthy and Klein, 2011) . There are several factors about the hospital that I attribute to the hospital being ranked among the top 100 healthcare facilities in the region. One of the elements involves the hospital’s capacity to live up to its mission, vision, and values. Sentara’s mission aims at improving health each day, a factor that explains the high patient rankings since patients experience enhanced and better service each time they visit the facility ( McCarthy and Klein, 2011) . The facility’s vision, on the other hand, involves becoming the healthcare choice for the community it serves. The hospital lives to its image by providing quality services compared to other facilities, an aspect that has made most members of the surrounding community make the hospital their preferred facility. Moreover, the facility's operations are guided by fundamental values, including integrity, service, patient safety, quality, and people, which encourage the delivery of excellent services as well as ensuring better health outcomes for the clients.

Sentara is also highly committed to serving the people as illustrated by their practices that focus on keeping people safe, listening and responding to clients appropriately, treating people with compassion, respect, and dignity, involving people and keeping them involved, and embracing teamwork to facilitate efficiency in the provision of quality healthcare. Another factor that contributes to the high performance of the facility is the continuous development of programs and interventions that focus on the continuous improvement of patient safety ( Sentara Leigh Hospital, 2018) . Sentara has expanded and intensified the patient safety program in a bid to encourage employees to be cautious about the signs of poor quality care and work on the signs. The hospital also aims at protection against medical error by implementing processes that allow for learning from mistakes. Further, the strategies provide leaders with viable methods that reinforce employee behavior and promote patient safety. Finally, the strategies provide rewards for attaining high-performance standards, which encourages employees to maintain high standards of performance and quality as they anticipate gaining the rewards.

Sentara also ensures that employees are adequately trained on the error-prevention behaviors and approaches, which enhance attention to detail and improve communication for higher patient safety and better health outcomes. The facility also enhances patient safety by providing the management with guidance tools that aim at promoting safety practices among the staff. The safety practices have helped to reduce safety-related events by approximately 80% ( Sentara Leigh Hospital, 2018) . Sentara embraces such practices as linking the overall care experiences for patients to safety and ensuring that all employees adequately understand safety measures ( Sentara Leigh Hospital, 2013) . Moreover, Sentara’s high performance is attributed to the fact that the facility provides affordable care to the community since it is a non-profit organization.

Sentara illustrates the excellence core values, which include honesty, fairness, personal responsibility, collaboration, and integrity in a number of ways and at different levels. Personal al responsibility is demonstrated through the facility’s emphasis on patient safety as well as requiring employees to undergo training to understand viable measures that can be implemented to ensure the safety of the patients ( Sentara Leigh Hospital, 2013) . On the other hand, the facility demonstrates collaboration through the facility’s tendencies to work together with employees and the community in making crucial decisions. Moreover, the facility demonstrates honesty and integrity by disclosing vital financial information in the publicly accessed reports.
