Education

Sentinel City School District is the primary provider of education in the city. The school district is made up of elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and higher education institutions. Higher education in the city is offered by both public and private colleges and universities. Learning activities are evident in the city through the children who are walking to school, and others who are on the facility’s playground. Although one school bus is seen outside the Sentinel City School District facility, most children walk to school. Students who do not use the school bus are transported to school by their parents; parents were seen picking students from the School District facility.

The city also has an ABC day care facility that cares for preschool children in the facility and others at home. The day care facility offers a comprehensive curriculum plan for both the home-based children and those being taken care of in the facility. The curriculum plan incorporates science and foreign language programs, and general and home-based elementary preparation and performing arts. Based on the conversion with the Mayor Franklin Hill, the city intends to improve K-12 education by decentralizing the decision-making process, which will provide more flexibility for principles and teachers in teaching the basics in addition to giving tests. The mayor also intends to improve the city’s education system by promoting discipline among students, reducing inequality, and eradicating bullying.

Recreation

Sentinel City Department of Parks and Recreation is responsible for the management of recreational activities in the city. The department manages the various parks around the city. Besides, the department headquarters have tennis courts where Sentinel City dwellers can play. Throughout the city tour, the bus came across multiple bike riders. Furthermore, Mayor Hill also has plans to construct a multi-functional sports complex, which will be a significant recreational center in the city. The mayor also plans to increase bike lanes and also increase the number of parks within the city as a way of promoting recreational activities among Sentinel City dwellers.

The plan to increase recreational centers will benefit Sentinel City dwellers in many ways. Participating in recreational activities has multiple benefits, including physical and mental health benefits, as well as other social benefits (Godbey et al., 2010). Recreational activities have physical health benefits in the form of reducing and controlling obesity. In addition, involvement in recreational activities also boosts the immune system and thus diminishing the risk of lifestyle diseases. The prevalence of health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, and some cancers, among other diseases, can be avoided when a person takes part in physical activities (Godbey et al., 2010). Furthermore, regular physical activities during recreation can help reduce the severity of many mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, panic disorder, eating disorder, and low self-esteem, among others (Godbey et al., 2010). The combined benefits of recreation to the physical and mental health of an individual contribute towards increasing life expectancy. Besides, additional social benefits in the form of reducing crime and drug abuse, enhancing social bond, and supporting youths through development and education, makes recreation an important subsystem in the city.

Aside from the recreational activities, Sentinel dwellers could also visit the community center. The community center is vital to the social well-being of people in the city. Individuals who visit the center can partake in various activities, including the parenting classes, basic computer skills, alcoholic anonymous, and English language learners. The community center helps in promoting cultural diversity and harmony as well as deterring negative behaviors, such as drug abuse and crime.

Politics and Government

The City hall is the main symbol of governance in Sentinel City. During the tour, Mayor Franklin Hill, who was at the City Hall, responded to questions about various systems in the city. Aside from the City Hall, which is the main center of governance, many roles and responsibilities have been decentralized into departments that were scattered around the city. Departments, including the department of transportation, department of park and recreation, and department of public health, have the responsibility to manage systems that are within their jurisdiction. Further governance activities were evident through the multiple development projects that were scattered around the city. Projects such as the affordable housing project, the redevelopment housing project, and the business development projects, are as a result of the government trying to meet its goals.

Political activities were also observed during the tour. In the City Hall, there was a demonstration by a group of Sentinel citizens who were revolting against a tax increase. The peaceful demonstration was a result of a political disagreement between the mayor and the city dwellers. Also, there was a poster with the message “your vote counts.” The poster was meant to sensitize the Sentinel public and encourage them to exercise their political right to vote. The message could have been posted because of an upcoming election in the city.

Sentinel city uses a democratic mayor-council system. While the mayor is exclusively elected, the council members, also known as aldermen, are sometimes elected or selected from the districts within the city. The primary responsibility of the mayor is to lead the executive branch of the city government, preside over council meetings, and appoint chiefs and departments. The mayor is also the budgetary officer of the city. There are many politically active organizations with the city. These organizations include the political societies, labor unions, interest and pressure groups, and foundations (Dimitrov, 2009). These organizations have a significant influence on political activities and governance within the city.
