Sentinel City is a city established by Ezra Archibald Everett and was used for the case simulation study. The city has grown and expanded and is a place that hosts several contemporary activities. It is a highly diverse place that hosts people of different genders, of different ages, different ethnic distribution, and different social classes. Its diversity is increased by the fact that it is a highly visited place. The aim of this study is to explore Sentinel City, undertake investigations concerning its surrounding community, and analyze the impact on the societal, community, and individual level.
The demographics of Sentinel city can be described as having diverse racial groups. The city has a total population of 634, 265. The white population account for 52.7%, the Hispanic contribute to 31.5%, the African American account for 10.4%, and the American Indian account for 2.0% of the total population. Concerning the demographics of the age, the population that is under 18 years are 21.7%, under 5 years are 7.4%, and persons over 65 years are 10.5%. The population ratio of males to female is almost the same. The median household income is $49,091 and it appears that the city is divided between poor and wealthy while the larger population are average income earners.

An analysis of the street shows that there are various groups of people that can be found on the streets. It is difficult to spot street parents with children with them. This could be due to the fact that most of the parents have abandoned their children and thus children can be seen roaming in the streets alone. Teens can also be seen on the streets playing some games and shouting. There are also young couples that can be seen minding their own businesses and they seem to be in a hurry. There are a few people with disability on the streets. Many people that are on the streets seem to be begging money and they appear homeless. What was quite surprising was that there were children seen in the streets abandoned. Most of these children appear to be begging. The fact that there are distinct social classes in the city means that there could be low-income earners and beggars on the streets. Those that are begging in the streets appear to be in a desolate state.
There some few instances of dogs off leash. Some of the dogs did not have leashes indicating that there were no individuals caring for them. There were also cats spotted on the streets and they were attended by their owners who were seen carrying them There were concerns in the city where a few dogs, cats, and rodents could be seen running around. The presence of these animals could be dangerous to the health and safety of the people living in the region. Aggressive dogs could be of harm to individuals that walked on the streets and rodents could spread disease.
There were individuals of different faiths in Sentinel City. The interfaith church in the city offered food to the homeless. Some of the individuals were Catholics, Jewish, and others Muslim. The diversity in the religion could be alluded to have been caused by the diversity in the racial and ethnic groups. However, the community around was observed to be mostly Christian and there were several churches throughout the city.
The target population considered were individuals between the age of 18 and 65 that were suffering from obesity. Individuals in this age group accounted for the largest percentage of the population. Obesity is a problem that faces many people in the modern world. The problems with obesity have been observed to have been caused by the fact that many people are leading sedentary lifestyles where there is little or no activity involved. Additionally, poor food choices have led to a large number of people suffering from obesity (Williams et al., 2015). Obesity is a problem that needs to be addressed effectively in order to ensure the wellbeing of the larger population.
The analysis of Sentinel City showed that it does not encourage physical activity. The windshield survey showed that the residential houses had very little spacing between them and there was no room for people to exercise around comfortably. The conditions of the park were poor with several complaints raised such as uncleanliness, presence of stray animals, and crime incidences. The poor state of the park means that people hardly visit and thus do not undertake physical activities. An analysis of Lily’s Restaurant in the city also showed that it served food which contains high percentages of calories. This could have contributed to the increasing number of individuals facing challenges with obesity. Healthy People 2020 provides national objectives for improving the health of individuals in the United States. Healthy People can be applied to encourage collaboration between the community and health sectors to solve the problem of obesity in the region.
In conclusion, the Windshield Survey of Sentinel City revealed several interesting facts about its demographics, the community around, its religion, and the target population studied. The demographics showed that the population is diverse but a majority of the population are White. The community around was not friendly as there were cases of street children and dogs roaming about. The main religion was Christian and this was observed by the distribution of churches. It was apparent that there was a problem of obesity. A solution should be sought by improving the park, encouraging physical activity, and promoting healthy food choices at the city’s restaurants.
