Leadership has over the year had different definitions, but all these definitions boil down to the art of being able to talk and motivate a group of people into achieving a specific goal. This definition of leadership illustrates the importance of being able to motivate other people and being ready to do lead by example. Effective leadership is built on ideas, it does not matter whether borrowed or original, but the art cannot be complete without communicating these ideas out to other people and engaging them well enough to act like the leader you want them to see ( Nohria and Khurana, 2014) . This paper will address the similarities and differences between servant and Adoptive leadership. We will also discuss two case studies as set in chapter 10 and chapter 11.

Servant leadership starts with a natural feeling of wanting to serve first. This very mindful decision makes a person desire to lead other people. Such leaders relate strongly to their roles which enables them to act on the grounds of values and principles. In my opinion, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela are the best examples of servant leaders in history. They had the desire to spread the message of peace to their people at the same time performing the duties they stood for ( Nohria and Khurana, 2014) . Adaptive leadership can be defined as a type of leadership that is based on facing tough challenges that provide people with the opportunity to want to learn new tactics of dealing with different behaviors, beliefs, attitude, perception, and changes that are inevitable that they might come across while dealing with a problematic situation in leadership. The dominant trait of adaptive leaders is to prepare and mentor their followers in unique ways; to be flexible in challenging conditions in real life, thus, most philosophers may say adoptive leadership is the art of mobilizing people to deal with difficult challenges and succeed. The best examples of adaptive leaders in history are Martin Luther King Jr and Walt Disney. These two leaders rose from difficult situations to try and lead their people while mentoring other young followers to become even better leaders than themselves by facing challenging moments and successfully overcoming them.

From the description above, it is evident that servant and adaptive leadership are very similar. Servant leadership has been elaborated as a type of leadership that has a moral angle to it. In the society we live in, servant leaders are expected to up their level of noble aspiration and human behavior of both the followers and the leaders ( Nohria and Khurana, 2014) . On the same note, adaptive leadership moral component can be easily identified. The moral part is believed to be derived from service leadership. All leaders are authentically servantly the moment they raise awareness of what is the right thing to do. Whenever they assess the needs of their followers for self-realization and achievement, when they lead their followers past their self-gains for the greater good of the society

Servant leadership can integrate adaptive, spiritual, steward, charismatic or other forms of leadership that are positive; although in comparison to servant leadership, an adaptive leader may or not have all the skills and qualities of a servant leader ( Northouse, 2019) . For instance, a servant leader may or not be proactively or actively dedicated to developing great leaders from their followers even though they play a crucial positive role by being good role models to their followers.

Below are responses to the case studies 10.1 and 11.1

Case 10.1

Mrs. Noble demonstrated almost all of a servant leader behaviors. These behaviors are:

Conceptualization; most parents and students described her as Essex High School.

Emotional healing; when the principal changed assignments in school, she provided a listening ear and also never criticized the students’ dress code; in fact, she enjoyed their company and the way they expressed themselves.

Helping followers grow and succeed; she always went the extra mile to assist the students in applying for colleges.

Creating value for the community; during charity events, she is among one of the senior staff who pledged the most even though her salary as the secretary of the school was not as much.

Empowering; whenever there was an alumnae meeting, most people said the only person who influenced them in school and they still remember in Mrs. Noble.

Mrs. Noble’s followers are mostly students, teachers, and parents.

Mrs. Noble's outcomes as a servant leader are follower’s performance and growth, great organizational performance and to say the least, societal impact ( Northouse, 2019).

My parents are the best servant leaders I have ever come across. From when I was young, they have empowered, helped me and my sibling grow and succeed in our academics and most importantly, provided an emotional healing space whenever we needed it the most.

Case 11.1

The problem that the editors were trying to address was an adaptive challenge. The reason behind this is the problem they were facing was in a way hard to tackle. Mental illness and depression are problems that needed one to change the assumption, beliefs, attitude, and behavior of other people for a solution to be found and accepted in society.

The principal’s reaction was uncalled for since the principal did not want to support her students in overcoming depression and mental illness the way they sort best, she did not fit in the qualities; providing direction, protection, orientation, conflict management, and productive norms and as such she is a maladaptive leader.

The holding environment for this case was not sufficient, it was terrible. On an excellent holding environment, the principal could have allowed the students to hold at least debate and form clubs that talk about their stigmas. This would have bread great confident leaders in the school.

In this case study, the adaptive leaders were Madeline Halpert and Eva Rosenfeld. This is because they become leaders from tackling difficult challenges and overcoming them in the end. They also empowered other students to grow their leaders by standing up and take on the stigma that they were facing. The leadership behavior they exhibited was to regulate distress ( Northouse, 2019)

From the illustrations above, it is evident that leadership plays a crucial role in society. The two discussed types of leadership; servant leadership and adaptive leadership have their unique similarities and differences. In spite of the differences and similarities, these two types of leadership uniquely different. It is, therefore, necessary to acknowledge these difference and the uniquely different leaders in our community and the roles they play to bring people together.
