There are various types of setbacks that organizations can encounter and each may need a response that is unique. Failure to organize prior the strategic planning process is one of the main reasons for setbacks during the strategic planning process (Martin, 2019). In order to avoid and overcome setbacks during strategic planning and marketing, identifying and communicating strategic planning objectives is crucial. Majority of the organizational leadership should be included in the planning process. Specific objectives and outcomes should be communicated. In addition, en evaluation plan should be formulated before the planning process to ensure that objectives are assessed on a periodic basis to ensure that the plan is on track (Zuckerman, 2012). The planning process should be described and communicated. Starting the planning process without a clear understanding of what the strategic planning process and marketing involves is can lead to setbacks during the planning process. The leadership of the CEO in strategic planning should be asserted and the roles of other leaders in the organization communicated to ensure that everyone plays his/her role in the planning process (Zuckerman, 2012).
The schedule for the strategic planning should also be communicated and all relevant historical information collected in order to plan for any potential setbacks and establish ways of overcoming them (Zuckerman, 2012). In addition, reviewing strategies used in the organization’s past and establishing their successes and failures can be an important asset in identifying possible setbacks, planning for them and overcome them. This can help identify problems that leaders in an organization should become aware of as they create strategies and execution methods (Zuckerman, 2014). Orientation meetings for the strategic planning process can also help in addressing any potential setbacks because the strategy planning team has the time to assess planning done in the past including success and failures to help guide the strategic planning process. Therefore, before starting the process of strategic planning, it is important to plan for setbacks and identify ways in which possible setbacks can be overcome in order to ensure a successful and effective planning process.
