Introduction

In essence, the overall impact that AI has had in shaping human rights is rather tremendous. Apparently, people have had varied opinions on whether it is necessary to use robots in daily activities in different discourses of life. While the applicability of robots based on their AI factor has been received warm-heartedly, there is still a big question on the on the role that robots and AI plays in achieving human rights. This paper intends to discuss the issue of human rights and artificial intelligence (AI) in the contemporary society. The paper will achieve this by closely looking at two sci-fi movies which are the “Short Circuit” and “Chappie”, and referencing the wired article. While individuals remain divided on this matter, the trend that AI is taking over jobs opportunity is undoubtedly high. Additionally, the ability of AI to make moral decisions has always been in question therefore raising issues regarding human rights.

Topic Explanation

Technological acceleration and in particular development of AI has generated a rather frenzied mix of anxiety as well as excitement in recent times. Apparently, this has sprouted debates between public figures regarding the threats of creating a super-intelligent form of AI. However, various optimists have had their share of thoughts by arguing that creation of an AI system would help solve pressing global problems. Analysis regarding the connections between the human rights as well as the issues related to AI has raised eyebrows across a range of areas. One good example is the prediction of an imminent decline in employment opportunities as a result of automation. Notwithstanding, there has been increasing level at which engagement of AI by the human rights institution has generally gone up (Jha & Topol, 2016). It is even fascinating how rights-based approach has turned out to be a major feature of the developments of ethical forms of AI. Many people believe that by protecting AI ethics in human rights remain to be the best way of making the aspect of artificial intelligence a positive force to be reckoned. As a result of the dynamism of technology and development AI, sets human being at a level of creating a commonplace in as far as human rights are concerned. To achieve this, there is a need for a greater research into the complicated effect of such technologies. In the meanwhile, proposals for various human rights framework to have a supportive hand on ‘ethical AI’ may end up becoming increasingly attractive.

Article Explanation

There are certainly various Wired Articles that have been published elaborating human rights as influenced by the use of AI in the contemporary society. One such article is “The Anxiety of AI Agency” that was written by Jason Pontin. In essence, this article puts the aspect of unemployment as a result of replacement by automation on the center stage (Pontin, 2018). The article suggests that artificial intelligence, as well as robots, is anticipated to rapidly eliminate job opportunities. One major factor that the article puts in question is the idea that automation is going to permanently depress both occupation and wages. The fact that AI reduces job opportunities raises questions regarding human rights since automation tends to deny individual work opportunities in recent times. For that reason, the article conforms to the topic of discussion regarding human rights and AI on a simple basis that people are deprived off their rights to get employment opportunities in a working environment (Pontin, 2018). Additionally, the aspect of reduced wages as discussed in the article summaries how artificial intelligence technology can be used to deprive people on their basic rights of employment as well as fair and equal wages.

Film-Topic Connection

Primarily, there have been various movies and comic films that have predicted the future regarding technological revolution. Apparently, “Short Circuit” and “Chappie” are good examples of films that have gone ahead and showcases how the use of robots and AI is likely to affect not only social behaviors but as well economic matters (Pontin, 2018). Notably, the film embodies various challenges that are likely to be associated with the use of AI in recent times. For instance, “Chappie” outlines the imminent conflict that can be caused by the use of autonomous robots in place of human military. Essentially, the fact that people are likely to be replaced by robots especially in military agencies creates a rather ethical concern leading to the violation of human rights. Additionally, the fact that the autonomous police officers can be manipulated raises a big question of racism and fear.

Another issue raised in the movie regarding human right is whether one can teach the AI to make good decisions that are not only ethical but also morally upright. In this light, Chappie displays a rather human-like bias, therefore, indicating that it is a specific product of the man. For instance, Chappie is manipulated to stop the other autonomous officers from patrolling. This shows that despite the fact that this technology has come to assist humankind, they have as well brought a negative impact. On the other hand, the movie “Short Circuit” is another example that tries to address the issues surrounding human rights in the contemporary American society. Making informed choices is part of moral decisions that basically inculcate human rights. The film raises a critical question of whether AI can make the right decisions. For instance, in the film, Jonny who is considered to be a robotic character is overly persuaded to help the thieves to complete a tunnel that would see then steal Vander-veer collection. The film as well as the article showcases how AI can generate fear to a particular society in case the technology went out of control. When Jonny tries to explore the world there is some sort of fear to the surrounding neighborhoods. Just like the wired article, the two films address issues surrounding the unemployment as caused by AI replacing workers and ethical matters especially decision makings.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, the aspect of technologic revolution has no doubt taken different issues in the society to a different level altogether. Apparently, the development of an AI system has had some impacts on the establishment of human rights in recent times. While there are obvious positive impacts of the AI, various job opportunities have been lost and wages reduced in different institutions thanks to development of AI. Notably, the dynamism of technology can be hard to predict, however, through Sci-fi films such as “Short Circuit” and “Chappie” it has become possible to do so. However, the big question remains on whether it would be possible to create robots and AI that can be taught on how to do the right things in the society.
