The political, social, and religious stances of the people are somewhat polarized. Therefore, a work of art that may be deemed offensive or obscene by a particular group of people may be perceived differently. Wholesomely, I view appropriate censorship as a process of restricting artists from composing artistic works that go against basic human principles. For instance, when an artist produces work that promotes the theme of violence, such artwork can be deemed inappropriate. Censorship is necessary for ensuring artists portray acceptable and appropriate themes. Consumers of art are a diverse group, but artists must ensure that the work they put forth should abide by what is deemed acceptable human standards. Obscenity in the artistic world is perceived to be relative depending on the artistic value and the medium used. That explains why a reclining nude is accepted as a masterpiece while a picture of a naked woman is frowned upon and deemed pornographic material.
Giuliani’s reaction to the painting was not justified because he sort to bar the artist’s and the museum’s freedom of expression and artistic freedom. I think the former mayor reacted so strongly to the figure because it depicted the Virgin Marry, a religious figure that is fundamental to the Catholic Faith in a somewhat unreligious and indecent manner. Although Giuliani is a renowned public figure, I believe he should not have a say in which artwork should be censored and which form of art should be portrayed.

I think the work is a masterpiece that demystifies creativity. However, I feel indifferent about the artwork because it is absurd that an artwork that may be deemed homophobic may be censored, yet an artwork that presents a religious figure in a somewhat indecent light, against the religious faith is deemed appropriate by most. Despite my reservations about the painting, it should not be censored because people will always have divergent opinions, therefore, artists should not be confined to paint works that are deemed acceptable to all.
