Regions of the Eastern coast were marked by distinct attributes beginning the establishment of the colonies. The thirteen British colonies were then divided into three geographical areas, which comprised of New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies. Each one of these colonies had developments specifically unique to those regions. However, the numerous similarities of these colonies they were very different in terms of politics, economy and socially. Escapees of religious persecution in England founded the New England and the trade centers were established in Middle colonies like Delaware and New Jersey (Kelly, 2006).
Due to their fertile soils that were perfect for farming the Middle colonies were referred to as the breadbasket colonies. Based on Colony’s environment, colonial economies were developed. All the three colonies had several conflicts with Native Americans due to Native land encroachment. Though they ran their government in different ways, the three colonies were similar since they were all democratic. They were self-ruled. The three colonies also practiced slavery that provided labor for farming especially the Middle colonies that enjoyed fertile land (Kelly, 2006).

The economic activities among the Southern and Middle colonies were similar since they revolved around farming and agriculture in general. New England had rocky soils and they depended on fishing and trading as their main economic activities. Surplus crops from both the regions were exported in exception of New England. All the three colonies depended heavily on manufactured goods from Britain. The three colonies enjoyed the accessibility of the ocean, Atlantic Ocean. They both navigated inland across the colonies via river systems. They also had similarities in their social life, like owning land, which was put on a premium by the pre-industrial economy; they also had little knowledge of medicine by modern standards. They were all religious and New England’s government was controlled by the church. In addition, a social hierarchy placed the rich and elite above the peasants and the poor in all the three colonies.
