The quote by Sir Robert Peel emphasizes on the police being the public and the public being the police. In my view, this quote means that the police like any other member of the public have a responsibility to ensure order is maintained in the society. The only difference is that the police are paid to focus on the safety of the public ("principles of policing (1829)," 2015). I think that the police and the public should work together. The police are few compared to the number of people in the community. Therefore, the statement that the police are the public and the public are the police means that both sides should work to support each other. I feel that Roberts' quote is not clearly depicted in society because police and the public often do not get along. Each party blames the other despite the police being from the public.
I think that police should be treated with respect by other community members. However, the issue of the treatment of police narrows down to their relationship with the community members. For a mutual and respectful relationship to exist between the public and the police both parties must play their roles. For example, the police must respond to the public’s interest. The police, mainly determine how the public treats them. However, the people ought to have respect and value for the police. This is because the police take up roles that no one else wants to do. They, therefore, risk their safety to protect the community. As a result, the police should be treated with respect since their profession is also difficult. In the same way that the police should be respected, they should also be transparent and committed to serving their roles in society. The treatment of police is mainly determined by their level of commitment and the role they play in society.
