Different social challenges act as a landmark to the current society. As a result, the need to train social scientists is increasing. At the same time, the social challenges present in the contemporary world are creating a situation where professionals not only concentrate on their line of professions but also collectively apply their knowledge from different disciplines to find lasting solutions to social issues in the society. The desire to find solutions to social problemshas subdivided disciplinary into different types such as multi and interdisciplinary. Due to their need in the society, it is paramount that these terms are understood.

Social scientists are individuals who study all aspects of society. Social scientists study past and present social events as well as their achievements in societyand relate them together. Further, social scientists describe the past and current events with human behavior and conclude from their data. Further, social scientists also study a group of people and how they relate to one another. As a result, research provided by social scientists provides an insight into how institutions, people, and a group of people make a decision and respond upon coming against a social change. Other than that, social scientists do a lot of research and are involved in collecting numerous data, analyze them, and interpret already existing data to provide a comprehensive report on social and cultural issues affecting the society.

The terms interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary are common, yet many people are not aware of the differences between these terminologies. Interdisciplinary involves the integration of knowledge and methods from different disciplines using a real synthesis of different approaches. Interdisciplinary involves an individual who does a lot of research on an issue and approaches it from a perspective of different disciplines ( Giusti, Castelnuovo & Molinari 2017). These individuals use different approaches derivedfrom various fields of knowledge while handling issues. They apply the knowledge gathered from different disciplines to find an answer to a specific problem. On the other hand, multidisciplinary involves a team of professionals working together to find a solution to a particular issue. While working together, these professionals draw their knowledge from their disciplines to give their view on the topic.A good example is a case where a disaster has occurred ( van IJzendoorn& Bakermans-Kranenburg, 2017). In this case, people from a different field, social, political field, technology, and commercial field come together to study the implications of the disaster and the best possible approach from different angles of tackling the issue. These people provide opinions based on the best knowledge of how such a disaster impact their field and the best way it can be solved from a perspective of that field.

Interdisciplinary gives students an opportunity to learn different ideas from a variety of disciplines connect them and use them to solve an issue in society. It allows the students to learn by making connections between ideas and concepts across different disciplinary boundaries. Students learning in this way are able to “apply the knowledge gained in one discipline to another different discipline as a way to deepen the learning experience” (Spenceret al., 2017). A glaring advantage of this type of learning is creativity it injects in students as they deeply cover more topics and develop the knowledge understanding a subject from different disciplines. However, interdisciplinary is faced with a challenge of integration confusion, budget constraint, and resistance to change.

In summary, the quest to find a solution to the different social issue in the current world has brought about different disciplines that aim at providing solutions. Other than the social scientists, different disciplinary terms such as multi and interdisciplinary are critical, and people must understand their meaning as well as their applications in social issues.
