The social construction of reality first appreciates the fact that every individual has a different perception of reality. The social construction of reality is a theory that postulates that the way individuals present themselves to others is shaped by two important aspects that include interactions and life experiences. How a person is raised and how they are taught to believe affects how individuals present themselves and how they perceive themselves and others. People’s perceptions concerning reality are shaped by what they believe and their respective backgrounds. Reality is also another factor of complication in the sociological perspective. What is regarded as real must be socially acceptable. Social interactions depend much on reality and the acceptance of what is happening. It is also crucial to note that human beings participate in the construction of reality, but it is not necessarily a product of their own doing.
The social construction of reality has particularly affected the way we think and the way we perceive reality. Personally, I have been a victim of this theory in my day to day endeavors. It is without a doubt that racism is still a major issue in the world and especially the United States. Racism, in itself, is a social construct that is a function of societal beliefs. It is based on the premise that one race is greater than the other and therefore, the better race is accredited for almost everything good that happens, and the opposite happens to the ‘'other'' races. Before I fully understood that racism was a matter of social construction of reality, I shared in the views that there are races that are superior to others and as such, they have immense abilities that cannot be replicated by people from the rest of the races.
