Negativity from society

The society has been built to believe that women who move away from relationships are bad and, therefore, they are accorded with much negativity. Susan indicates how she endured hostility from her husband for quite sometimes. But she never disclosed or moved away, knowing very well that she may be negatively perceived by the society if she left her family. The negativity thus forces women to struggle in an abusive relationship yet they could move away.

Fear of not being believed

Women are viewed as weak and in this case, moving out of an abusive relationship will mean that they are the cause of the break-up. Susan narrates how she wore make-ups to hide the bruises from the public. An insight into how society may use domestic problems to persecute women. She fears how the society will take her. This is because society has been made to blame women for mistakes that happen in many relationships. The disbelief and blame from the society thus make many women continue being in an abusive relationship. The mindset of ride-or-die from society is also another factor that contributes to women staying in an abusive relationship. In the video “2020 Spousal Abuse” it gives the clue of how society groups individuals according to social class. They tend to believe that the rich or families that are well-off do not experience domestic violence. Individual Factors

Personal responsibility

Women take the fault of many cases of abuse in relationships. They believe that since it is their fault that the relationship experiences violence every moment that they need to step up and fix it. This has been as a result of men pointing fingers to women whenever they have a disagreement. In the video “2020 Spousal Arousal”, Susan explores how she continued to stay with Still because she believed that, she was the sole cause of the problems experienced. This was further aided by the act of still accusing her over everything. She believed by staying, she would make up things.

The need to maintain the family

Despite being in abusive relationships, women are reluctant to leave, in attempts to maintain their families. Women adore their family and it is due to love, especially, to children that they stay in abusive relationships. Susan narrates how she never wanted to leave her family, which included young children. Susan had her family at heart and had to endure the abusive relationship.

Optimism

In challenges of abusive relationships, women maintain their hopes, being optimistic that soon the negative will change to positive. Women usually hope that things will change and start working as they were before they turned wrong. In the video “Domestic Violence Part1”, research reveals that women try a maximum of seven times to leave an abusive relationship before they fully do it. This is an indication that optimism keeps them going before they exhaust all the trials. This is a factor that has seen many women continue to stay in an abusive relationship despite the recurrence of violence.
