Research is sophisticated due to the multiple studies that it becomes difficult to determine the best resources to use in a given study. The bias assumptions on a given study can sway the findings to the author’s beliefs thus reducing the reliability of the study. Social media is one of the topics that have thousands of studies but are divided into different issues. Most of the reviews on social impacts of social media mainly lean on the negative aspects thus making it difficult to find a social science journal that addresses both positive and negative effects. After reviewing multiple social science and humanities articles, I chose the three items below.

Lenhart, A., Smith, A., Anderson, M., Duggan, M., & Perrin, A. (2015). Teens, Technology and Friendships.  Pew Research Center: Internet, Science & Tech . Retrieved April 3, 2018, from http://www.pewinternet.org/2015/08/06/teens-technology-and-friendships/

Singh, M., Amiri, M., & Sabbarwal, S. (2017). Social Media Usage: Positive and Negative Effects on the Life Style of Indian Youth.  Iranian Journal Of Social Sciences And Humanities Research UCT . J. Soc. Scien. Human. Resear. (UJSSHR) , 123-127. Retrieved April 3, 2018, from http://uctjournals.com/

Nilan, P., Burgess, H., Hobbs, M., Threadgold, S., & Alexander, W. (2015). Youth, Social Media, and Cyberbullying Among Australian Youth: “Sick Friends”.  Social Media + Society 1 (2), 205630511560484. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/2056305115604848

The three articles above were essential in learning the different impacts of social media to the youths however the second article was the most inclusive of the three. During the research, it was essential to understand the trend of social media networks and Pew Research Center provides the best surveys based on timeliness and reliability. The article demonstrated that teens among other youths are changing the mode of interaction, but it did not address the issues of social media based on educative reasons. The second article was conclusive of both positive and negative effects of social media. However, I needed to ensure that the article was the most suited for this study hence reviewed a few more articles. The third article was based on cyberbullying thus did not qualify in learning about the benefits of social media. The survey and review of multiple articles made it challenging to choose the three journals, but I believe their information is crucial for my study.

The abstract of the article demonstrate that social media is integral to the Indian youths of the current generation. However, the time spent on the media can result in addiction that leads to negative impacts of social media, but the authors are adamant that for all the negative impacts of social media, it is also beneficial in the growth and development of the youths. The study is not biased in its accessions thus making it the most suitable for this study and its use of both quantitative and qualitative data analysis enhances its credibility. It is also among the latest journals on social sciences and humanities thus making it timely.

Questions

Is the study applicable to Youths all over the world?

Is social media more beneficial or detrimental to the youths?

The questions above are essential to understanding the role of social media to the youths of this generation since it is part of their lives. In the bid to answer the question about benefits and detriments of social media to the youths, the authors stated in one of their findings, “Over-utilization of social media reduces the productive capacity of users due to continuous surfing and creates physical as well as mental problems.” The quote demonstrates that social media is productive and essential to the youths but overusing it would lower its usefulness and cause addiction which is detrimental to youths’ development. The study also uses many studies that show that it applies to youths from different countries. Some of its references needed to be reviewed to gain an advanced awareness of the role of social media.

Bhargava, A, Rani, M. (2015). The influence of social media on Indian teenagers. International Journal of Science, Technology & Management, 4, 246-256. Retrieved April 3, 2018, from https://www.ijstm.com/images/short_pdf/1430388217_524.pdf

The above study would help determine the credibility and reliability of the article above thus making it more integral to this study.

Siddiqui, S., & Singh, T. (2016). Social Media its Impact on Positive and Negative Aspects. International Journal of Computer Applications Technology and Research, 5(2), 071-075. Retrieved April 3, 2018, from http://www.ijcat.com/archives/volume5/issue2/ijcatr05021006.pdf

This article enables understanding the broader aspects of social media impacts in the world thus answering the question on applicability to youths in other countries.
