Social media use has been increasing exponentially over the years as more people acquire smartphones and other devices that can access the internet coupled with an increase in social media sites. It may be surprising to note that social media use has a significant impact on the wellness of people. Most people using social media do not consider the effects it has on them until when there is a significant impact on their lives. Social media have a significant impact on physical health. There is a lot of information on how people can improve their physical wellness on social media. The information has introduced many new ways of taking care of people’s bodies. There is motivation from inspiring stories in the social media that motivate people to take action and be physically fit by changing diet, exercising, or stopping unhealthy behaviors like alcohol and substance abuse. However, social media can hurt the users since there is also false information that can be harmful to the body. There are unsafe workouts in social media that would lead to unhealthy practices and hence poor physical wellness. There are bizarre diets and unsafe detoxes that would in turn lead to poor eating habits and disorders. Social media have a great impact on the social wellness of individuals both negative and positive. It has enabled individuals and communities to create and maintain social capital that has enabled them to get resources like information and social support from others. That then leads to positive social outcomes such as social ties, reciprocity, and trust. It can also lead to increased happiness and nurture a person’s social circle by connecting people with their loved ones over great distances and hence creating a “global village.” However, social media hurt the social wellness of people because failure to have personal relationships makes people feel lonely and anxious. The relationships created in social media do not have strong bonds like the ones created with contact and therefore feel inadequate. People also spend a lot of time on social media so much that they do not have time to interact with other people. The social interactions on social media also create high levels of jealousy since people feel bad when they see their friends interacting with other people and not them. People feel not wanted when people don’t “like” their pictures on social media which in turn destroys social bonds. Social media have a significant impact on the emotional wellness of the user because there are relationships created either with other users or the social media itself. Social media can have positive impacts on the users because there are posts that can be positively motivating and hence uplift the emotions of an individual. It also creates an easy and fast medium of connection with loved ones and therefore making people feel loved and important. However, there are negative effects of social media such as anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Users have fear of missing out when a person is logged out. They can also be manipulated when they see other people “doing well and having fun and therefore trigger anxiety and low self-esteem. Social media impact the financial wellness of the users. There is a lot of information in social media on what a person wants to purchase and therefore it can help in choosing the best quality with minimum cost and hence saving. However, social media influence and pressure can lead a person to buy something he/she does not need to fit. A person can also buy things to post on social media and hence making a poor financial decision which negatively affects their financial wellness. True work-life balance should be a state in which an individual can maintain an equilibrium by equally prioritizing the demands of his/her career and the demands of his/her personal life. By doing so, a person can maintain overall wellness since they can take care of all aspects of their lives. The main challenge in maintaining a balance is lack of planning and therefore finding myself overdoing one aspect of my life. This may be in achieving my career goals and forgetting my personal life or spending much time on technology and not spending time with my family. To overcome the challenges, I have created a schedule of how I spend my time by prioritizing the things that are significant for my overall wellbeing and minimizing the time for things that have a negative effect on my wellbeing. It has been successful although I have not been able to reach the desired equilibrium that optimizes my overall wellbeing.
