Socialization is part and parcel of the daily lives of human beings. Usually, everyone would expect to interact with others appropriately and respectfully. However, the socialization may be influenced negatively or positively by several factors such as ethnicity, gender, and class.

Role of Gender, Ethnicity and Class

In several societies, the interaction of people is strictly limited to class. For instance, children living in wealthy leafy suburbs may not socialize with those living in poor neighborhoods. Specifically, the two categories may consider themselves to be too insecure and physiologically disturbed if such a situation arises. Furthermore, the poor may feel out of place when interacting with the rich. On the other hand, individuals drawn from a typical rich class can communicate constructively without any fear. Ethnicity and gender also affect socialization. Indeed, it has been established that racial and ethical socialization is determined by socialization messages. The message from parents and other elderly members of society may encourage or discourage socialization. For instance, when one ethnic group paints a bad image of the other, positive socialization may not be experienced. Similarly, many societies encourage their men to protect their loved ones, be brave and resilient. The motivation is, therefore, gender-based as it helps males to be more social than females.

Hoch child’s Commodification of Feeling Model

Some career fields are considered to be specific for a particular gender, which is according to Hoch child’s commodification of feeling model. For instance, a male nurse may not feel okay working in healthcare settings since the field is filled with females. In the travelling industry, flight attendants referred to as air hostesses is a career that is believed to be meant for ladies. As such, a male may feel out of place working here. Other fields such as drivers, engineers, mechanics and construction work are supposed to be male-dominated making females to seem out of place working there. Nevertheless, in such types of environments, one must learn to be accommodative and think beyond gender to offer the required services.

Conclusion

Human beings are supposed to socialize. The socialization process may be promoted or hindered by several factors including gender, ethnicity and social class. For instance, the rich and poor hardly interact positively since one level may feel inferior, superior, or insecure. Also, when one ethnic group paints a bad image of the other, positive socialization may not be achieved. On the other hand, some careers are considered to be meant for men and these include engineering as indicated by Hoch child’s commodification of feeling model. However, one must learn to be accommodative to bring forth better results.
