Society expectation and subsequent pressure have played a major role in influencing and shaping how individuals should appear before others. Such phenomenal expectations have been the dominant providing force for increased emphasis on certain appearance among societal members to meet the expected threshold. Therefore, such appearance constructs have played a primary role in the widespread use of wakeup and the adoption of a certain body image. Such expectations can be attributed to the extreme extents that have been adopted by both male and females to appear in a certain way that is seemingly approved by society. In this speech, I will address the role that has been played by the society’s pressure on having a certain appearance. This phenomenon has ended up being entrenched in nearly every societal aspect ranging from fashion to the technology products being consumed by society members.

The society’s pressure on having a certain appearance has immensely been faced by the celebrities who are often forced to go an extra mile to appear in the way people expect them to be. As a result of this, some have resorted to procedures such as plastic surgery for their skin, buttocks and breasts. For instance, the hip-hop icon Nicki Minaj jokingly fired back at her critics who accused her of looking fake due to artificial implants she had incorporated in her body by acknowledging that everything about her was fake except for her money. Such a case clearly demonstrates the extent to which society’s pressure can go in as far as influencing people’s appearance. A same phenomenon was observed for the case of pop star Michael Jackson who underwent plastic surgery in the bid to look the way the society expected him to look. You can imagine if Michael Jackson would have been that popular had be not boosted the tone of his skin through plastic surgery. Personally, I don’t think so.

On an additional note, such society’s pressure on having a certain appearance has also been manifested for the case of dark-skinned ladies. In this case, it has become a common phenomenon that such ladies have ended up bleaching their skin to achieve a certain tone of their skin deemed acceptable across society. This explains the extent to which the constructed society’s pressure with regard to appearance has ended up influencing individuals’ behaviors, especially among women. Even though such cases would not have been existing in absence of the pressure from the society, it should be acknowledged that such expectations on having a certain appearance have been normalized. As such, a person has to ascribe to such expectations in terms of appearance to feel accepted and equal to the rest of other societal members. Even though it might seem gross, this explains the reasons as to why ladies have been the largest consumers of skin lightening products. The expectations for one to appreciate and be proud of their natural dark skin is no longer tenable. This explains why a dark-skinned lady will do everything possible to lighten her skin, even if it means injecting the body with suspicious implants. Any typical lady will do everything possible to look and be like Kim Kardashian.

Furthermore, the society’s pressure on having a certain appearance has also been reflected in terms of fashion. This explains the reason as to why plus size women usually have a rough time when shopping for their fashion clothes. Considering that there are expectations for women to maintain a certain body size, very few fashion stores usually stock clothes for plus size women. Such expectations can further be attributed to celebrities that have played a key role in justifying such societal pressures. For instance, a majority of women are usually under pressure to adjust their body size in the bid to look like the Kardashian’s. Such society’s pressure on having a certain appearance has even further been rubberstamped by platforms such as Snapchat whereby filters have been incorporated to change the appearance of individuals.
