The dumping of solid wastes has become a severe and widespread problem in rural and urban areas. Therefore, municipal solid waste collection and disposal necessitates effective separation processes to achieve safe and conducive environments. One of the most effective ways of separating solid waste is through sorting households before and after collecting the waste materials. Subsequently, the method of mechanical component is a conversant separation process. In mechanical component separation, the recovery of resources from solid wastes is the main objective, where the energy and conversion products are to be recovered from processed wastes. Additionally, screening is another method of extricating solid wastes, reliant on their magnitude, which uses one or more screening platforms. Screens are utilized before or after chopping and after air separation of waste materials in several applications that work with either heavy or light fraction materials. I have visited a materials recovery facility (MRF) located in Brooklyn, which is also my area of residence. MRF can be described as a solid-waste management plant that processes recyclable materials that can be sold to manufacturing firms in the form of raw materials for new merchandise. MRF’s can either be categorized as dirty or clean, which depends on whether the facility handles materials that are mixed with other municipal waste. The facilities are essential in reducing the waste stream, providing raw materials to various firms, and reducing pollution linked with the manufacture of new commodities. My community in Brooklyn benefits from the MRF in multiple ways, such as a source of employment to the population and benefits from the company’s corporate social responsibilities. The facility organizes sensitization campaigns against drug abuse and organizing local tournaments in various sporting activities, such as football and rugby. The facility has also provided needy students with bursaries and scholarships to help them financially pursue their academic goals.
