The focus of your discussion is the challenge that nurses face as they attempt to take part in advocacy efforts. You mention that nurses lack the power that they need to push for change because many feel intimidated. To address this problem, you propose that nurses should work closely with organizations which provide them with opportunities for active participation in policy formulation and implementation. While I agree with collaboration with other stakeholders could enhance nurse advocacy efforts, I feel that instead of seeking support from outsiders, nurses should begin by leveraging the resources that they have. For example, training is one of the simple initiatives that go a long way in preparing nurses for the challenges of advocacy (Contreras, 2011). Through training, nurses acquire the essential competencies required for effective advocacy and participation in political programs. In summary, I think that nurses should not be too quick to accept that they are powerless and turn to others for help. Instead, they should build their own competencies and identify ways through which they can have an impact on politics.

Allow me to begin by appreciating your personal efforts in nursing advocacy. In your post, you share that through your membership in the New York State Nurses Association, you have been able to push for reforms in such issues as tuition reimbursement and health care for nurses who are retired. I think that you represent the essence of advocacy. Whereas I join you in recognizing the need for nurses to become advocates for their own wellbeing, I feel the need to point out that we must expand our advocacy efforts. For instance, we can champion for the rights and welfare of patients. In fact, this is one of the primary mandates of nurses (Gerber, 2018). We are expected to take all necessary steps to ensure that patients receive the best possible quality of care. By working with other stakeholders like political leaders, we can fulfill this obligation.
