Cultural sensitivity in nursing is established on understanding patients’ culture, race, religion, gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation in provision of safe and effective healthcare. Each human being has a set of assumptions through which they perceive various aspects of life. It is essential that nurses familiarize themselves with the different worldviews that exist without assigning value to them (ASU , 2017). Personal worldviews determine how a patient interacts with the healthcare system. Careful nursing proposes establishing common ground on spiritual worldviews between the nurse and patient, to assist in sharing medical understandings with individuals who are against certain treatments due to personal beliefs.
When dealing with patients with different worldview, some of my strengths include validating before drawing any conclusions. Situations may vary greatly from what they look like on the surface to what they are in reality. Listening before judging has been helpful in processing the true nature of patients. My weakness is unintentionally imposing too much of my personal beliefs on a patient who has contrasting opinions. It is crucial for a nurse to gain full understanding of different worldviews that arise in a clinical setting, in order to control personal biases. Maintaining a neutral perspective in delivery of healthcare can help nurses in interacting with patients from diverse cultures, religions, and sexual orientations. Based on the principle of autonomy, I retain the final say in terms of ethical decision-making and intervention in a difficult situation. Autonomy respects the aspect of self-rule, where a patient has the moral right to exercise decisions on their being (Motloba, 2018). In the occasion that I find myself in a reduced capacity to make decision on my health, my family should have the final decision. It is only rational that they take up that role based on their concern for my health and close relations.
