Barbara Dossey defines spiritually as a connection outside oneself that involves values, purpose, and meaning. It is an indication of the things that inspire a person while giving them hope (Hrabe, Melnyk, & Neale, 2018). Spirituality defines a person’s moral values, their connections with others and how they perceive certain matters in their surroundings. Therefore, it gives someone purpose in their life.
A spiritual connection, on the other hand, is something that all nurses are required to possess in their profession. They are taught of its importance from their studies into their practice. In the Provision 1 code of ethics for nurses states that “The nurses practice with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth and unique attributes of every person.” (Hrabe, Melnyk, & Neale, 2018). There is also an extension of the same in Provision 5 where there is an emphasis on respect and compassion for themselves as nurses. Therefore, their responsibility is towards themselves and their patients.

Despite spirituality being a critical area as they provide care to their patients and themselves, there is an observation where sometimes it becomes too much to handle. According to research done, most nurses tend to become depressed in their line of career due to the workloads, financial pressures, and family responsibilities. They are also required to live a life of purpose. Jim Loehr a psychologist believes that lack of purpose can lead to living a life that drains one's energy (Hrabe, Melnyk, & Neale, 2018). Purpose gives someone hope and a reason to want to become a better person. There is joy in the journey in that there are times when people experience grief, tragedy, and sadness which are part and parcel of the human life. It is possible to achieve peace and joy in that it can be achieved through rising to challenges presented on a daily basis through extraordinary ways. It is advisable to keep up with technology as nurses. LP shows the significant change of the pacemaker technology. There is the need for more literature for nurses on the subject in order for them to keep up with the innovations taking place.
As a nurse, spirituality is important to me in my future professional practice. As discussed earlier, spirituality mainly involves how one relates to others outside themselves. Personally, through the understanding of the article, it is critical that I always meditate with myself in order to find out what I consider as my values. It is important that I revise my values for they define my character and are reflected through how I make others feel. It is also important to identify my purpose in life. It will act as a source of hope and motivation in my line of profession and due to such an understanding, I will be able to achieve peace and joy. A purpose will assist in overcoming challenges that present themselves in my life hence avoiding chronic diseases in the future. It will also assist in balancing my life which involves; family responsibilities, financial aspects, and work responsibilities. I also require to understand the various changes taking place technologically in my profession. It is important to be knowledgeable about such aspects to avoid stress while performing my duties. Information such as the changes in the pacemaker technology will assist in making my work easier and it can be achieved through constant yearn of information as a nurse.
