The issue of understaffing of nurses has been a major concern in the healthcare sector over the years. Nurses tend to have a lot of patients to handle at a given time and this result to issues of nurses being burnt-out and not in a position to handle their work to the best. The disconnect may be as a result of using policy makers who are not nurses to enforce and create laws related to nursing. This is the irony of the situation. Nurses need to be the main people at the top of the policy making chain who develop laws and regulations in relation to their practice. They are at an advantageous position which gives them a better hand at creating laws and regulations that best suit their needs and demands while at the same time providing quality care to the patients.
Having nurses as the policy creators in their field is the best way to achieve optimum care. For instance, a policy maker who is not a nurse may consider increasing the number of shifts or working hours for a nurse to ease the pressure to meet the demands of the patients. While this may seem as a noble decision, it may not be the best decision all factors considered. The issue of staffing is a more dominant problem as opposed to the issue of increasing shifts. A nurse with more shifts will be overwhelmed compared to a nurse in a hospital setting with more staff. With this in mind, it will be wise to have nurses create their laws and regulations since they know their work and they are in the best position to create programs and policies that are relatable to them and they become more proactive. Nurses need to participate in elections, they must increase their power by getting involved in professional organizations and writing legislative letters
