State governments face new and daunting challenges. How has the intense competition in state politics impacted the ability of politicians to meet these challenges?
State politicians have a role in ensuring they meet the promises and functions they intended to accomplish before their election. Lack of accomplishment of these roles leads to the individuals not being successful in their re-election ( Gordon, 2017) . The political sector has always been a challenge in developing policies and accomplishing the needs of various people in their specific states. Divisive ways of handling political matters are a problem that has worsened the challenges that statesmen face in the current days.

Some of the roles of state politicians include working towards the enhancement of a better economy, ensuring security, and the availability of governmental services in their states. Healthcare services are among the government services people expect statemen to guarantee ( Jones, 2019) . The increasing competition in the political sector has made it hard for the leaders to achieve these expectations as it has caused more divisions ( Doldor, Wyatt & Silvester, 2019) . When people fail to unite, it has always been challenging to implement policies ( Doldor et al., 2019) . The existence of Covid-19 is a situation that made it cumbersome for statesmen to achieve the expectations of many members of the public. There always has to be a way a statesman handles the problems to make people pleased with their work.
In general, the divisive competitive politics in both states and the federal level impact the functions of state politicians. There is a need to handle partisan politics because it makes it hard for their officials to focus on the needs of their people and remain loyal to their parties. The threat of having to seem re-election causes an increase in pressure in the work environment of the leaders. The accomplishment of roles like healthcare, security, and economic growth will always be possible when competition does not affect service delivery. Covid-19 challenges can be addressable through the embracing of unity and avoidance of partisan ideologies.
