Risk factors associated with that area and those cancers 

In the United States, cancer cases have been more prevalent in three regions. According to Worldatlas.com (n.d) cancer incidences have been most common in the eastern side of the country. Kentucky ranks first in cancer cases with 512 residents diagnosed with the condition out of 100,000 people. Kentucky is cited as a poor state in the United States and is said to have minimal investments in cancer prevention and detection ( Worldatlas.com, n.d) . The state also reports the highest number of deaths linked to cancer. The most common types of cancers in the region include lung cancer, skin, breast, colon, bladder and prostate cancers. Also, the region has lately reported cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukaemia, kidney, pancreatic and thyroid cancers. 

One of the risk factor known to predispose Kentucky residents to cancer is tobacco smoking. According to Worldatlas.com (n.d), the state has a rich history of tobacco growing. The region has its foundation on the tobacco industry. Kentucky has nearly a quarter of its population smoking cigarettes. The fact explains why lung cases have been on the increase in Kentucky more than in any other state. Empirical research reports that smoking tobacco products is known to be a causative factor of almost every 10 cases of lung cancer. Cancers related to smoking can affect any organ of a human body including parts such as cervix, bladder, blood, stomach, stomach, mouth and throat, liver among others ( Worldatlas.com, n.d) . Research report that tobacco smoke releases almost 70 chemicals that are cancer causing termed as carcinogens.

Family history is a predisposing risk factor linked to the rise of cancer cases in Kentucky. There have been a record of cancer cases along the family line who share genes, environment and habits that increase the risk of contracting cancer. 

Drinking of alcohol is a risk factor that has been increasing chances of getting cancer in Kentucky. According to research, alcohol laced drinks are linked to high cases of cancer in the region. Cancers caused by alcohol drinking behaviour include colon and rectum, mouth and throat, breast, oesophagus and liver ( Worldatlas.com, n.d) . Additional risk factors include HPV, aging, sun exposure, poor diet, overweight, exposure to chemicals and lack of physical activity. 

Alternative treatments or therapies that may be helpful or useful for the above populations 

Gerson Therapy is a common alternative method of cancer treatment. The therapy is a complex regimen that constitute enemas, strict diet and dietary supplements. According to Nih.gov (n.d), Gerson therapy capitalizes on the belief that cancer can be treated by getting off toxins from the body, substituting excess salt with potassium and boosting the body’s immune system. 

Acupuncture is alternative treatment that can applied in treatment of cancer cases in Kentucky. It is believed that acupuncture relieves cancer pain and other symptoms such as hot flashes ( Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), n.d) . The mode of treatment utilizes sterile needles to treat cancer patients. 

Massage therapy can also be applied in treatment and relieving of cancer symptoms. The alternative treatment method relieves symptoms such as nausea, depression, paid and anxiety. The therapy entail use of deep or intense pressure on certain body areas such as directly above the tumour where a patient’s skin is sensitive. 

Mindfulness based stress reduction is a type of alternative treatment that can help patient treat symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, stress, anxiety and general mood distortion hence improving the patients quality of life ( Nih.gov, n.d) . The form of treatment can best be applied to patient diagnosed with early stages of breast cancer. 

Yoga is form of therapy that can be utilized to improve symptoms such as stress, depressions and distress among cancer patients. Research reports that breast cancer patients and survivors can rely on Yoga to alleviate fatigue. 

Herbal supplements as reported by 2008 literature review can produce positive outcomes in managemnet of symptoms such as pain, insomnia and nausea. Additional alternative treatment that can utilized include relaxation therapy, hypnosis and bio-feedback in managemnet of cancer symptoms.
