The most engaging scene in Step Up takes place at the end of the movie. Tyler and Nora pe rformed this scene in front of school staff and guests. Moments leading up to the dance, Tyler has lost one of his close friends, Skinny, and he finally is coming to the realization that the only two things that matter in his life are dance and Nora. Meanwhile , Nora is confused on how her showcase will go after Tyler walked out of rehearsal s weeks before the show . Secondly, her success at Maryland School of Arts depends on how well she executes her routine. Tyler shows up before the curtain raise showing confidence and support for Nora’s dreams by apologizing and ready to step up to his part of the routine . The dance begins with an incredible musical arrangement by Miles and Nora walking onto the stage with her female troupe to an opening ballet routine. Mac is then seen walking in just in time for the show.

The relationship between Tyler and Nora in the dance is tender and intense . However, it’s the muscular and emotional tensions of the backup dancers that make the scene even more alive . This dance on film is about social class and cultural identity . The narrative also exemplifies the fluidity in the ballet and hip-hop moves. Anne Fletcher, the movie’s director, and choreographer, skillfully used editing and camera position ing to create a plot with multiple layers of depth in flair, tone , and identity through the movements. Anne seamlessly constructs the dancing bodies in a versatile arrangement, especially in their transitions . This enables the characters to perform feats that would be impossible to execute out of the camera lens , proving that dance is very much a part of the visual framework. Step up was one of the notable movies that took the risk of blending ballet with hip-hop on the big screen.

The narrative on social class is felt through the neatness of Nora’s style and dance background compared to Tyler’s street dance and dress code. Tyler’s strength and aggression in dance is not something that is taught in a classroom . Instead , it comes from the hurdles and struggles he has experienced while growing up . As a result, he is dependent on the dance to secure a better future. Watching Tyler’s determination when it’s just him and Nora on the floor during their solo dance allows the viewer to understand that excelling in life is not dependent on one’s background. Instead, it depends on one’s ability to take advantage of all the opportunities . Step up is thus an inspiration to many that may be struggling with understanding that achieving in life is entirely dependent on their efforts. Nora and Tyler’s characters are well played but when the dance is over, its Nora’s character that stands out. Despite being from a privileged background, she can interact and work with those from less privileged backgrounds. This shows that she is willing to work with others to achieve a common goal.
