During pregnancy, there are various changes that occur in women's immune system. Due to the additional functioning of the heart and lungs to support the growing baby, the immune system naturally becomes weak, making you susceptible to diseases and disorders. Flu is very common among pregnant women and from the description that Elizabeth gave, all the symptoms matches that of flu. This includes fever, headache, muscle aches, vomiting, and a stiff neck. However, it would be wrong to jump into conclusion that this is flu. It might be another disease in the making.

Elizabeth reported that she felt a bit confused and disoriented. This would have been caused by her pregnancy. Pregnant mothers usually experience a phenomenon referred to as “baby brain.” During pregnancy, many women reports of declining cognitive abilities which include feeling confused and disoriented, forgetfulness as well as having difficulty in remembering things. This is experienced by 50 to 80 percent of all pregnant women. ‘Baby brain' is caused by grey matter reductions in the brain of a pregnant woman. According to the study done, the most affected part of the brain is one that processes social information like establishing mum to baby bond (Young, 2018). Another possible cause of why pregnant women feel confused and disoriented is due to the depressed mood that could be affecting their memory. I think that feeling confused and disoriented is normal and pregnant women should not worry about it that much.

I believe that early pregnancy is the cause of all the described symptoms. Many women in their early stages of pregnancy usually experience same symptoms. I do not think this is caused by ‘baby brain’ since not all pregnant women experience it.
