Original Post

The thousands of people who lost their lives during the First World War is one of the main reasons why this conflict has endured in the collective memory of mankind. However, this war is also recognized for the technological advancements that it fueled. Sanitary napkins, poison gas, tactical air support, machine guns and tanks are some of these advancements (“5 Technological Innovations”, n.d). It is not surprising that most of these innovations involved technologies and instruments that were used on the battle field. In addition to introducing new technologies, the advancements also led to improvements in existing equipment and tools. For example, airborne weapons such as tactical air support made it possible to attack the enemy from a safe distance and to cause greater devastation. It is worth noting that some of the advancements had little to do with combat. These include blood banks, synthetic rubber, ultrasound and mass radio, among many others (Hambling, 2017). Even after the war, the legacy of the technological advancements endured. These advancements enhanced the military and economic strength of the United States and its people.

Peer Response

In your post, you identify some of the technologies that emerged during World War I. They include mobile X-ray machines, death charges and aircraft carriers. I am not surprised that nearly all of the technologies that you mention were used directly in the war effort. Do you think that the nature and applications of these technologies reflect the ugly side of the human spirit? Could it be that businesses exploit violent conflict for profit? Another issue that you address in your post is that the technological advancements deepened racial divisions and heightened tensions. You add that racial minorities languished in poverty. While I find that your discussion is enlightening, I feel that it would be more impactful if it stated how the technological advancements led to the effects that you identify.
