Teen Dating Violence: What Parents Need to Know

Teen violence is the type of violence that is committed to or by youth in teen years. The offenses include neglect, rape, murder, and date assault. The statistics show that violence among high school children involving a weapon stood at 17.9 percent per 100000 of the population in 2013. Rates of rape were recorded at 8.8 percent for women and 5.5 percent for men. The dating violence among high school children was 20.9per cent and 10.4 percent in boys (Sumner et al., 2015) . According to 2011 data, sexual violence where a perpetrator committed the violence was high among girls at 19.3 percent as compared to men at 1.7 percent. 

Various strategies for the prevention of teen violence have been proposed. Proactive strategies have proven to have the most impact on reducing incidences of teen violence. These proactive strategies include family-based programs, increased education on early childhood, counseling, public policy approaches, and school-based programs (Sumner et al., 2015) . The family-based programs help in the improvement of bonds between the teens and their parents. They can improve on their social and moral support resulting in better communication between parents and teens. This approach has the most impact on the prevention of violence among teens since pre-exposure was minimized. Other programs under the proactive approach, such as education on early childhood, reduced the chances of kids committing violence in teenage years through the imparting of positive emotional and social characters of kids. Early childhood created a strong moral foundation in the children that play a significant role in making then shun violence at teen years.

Research showed that therapeutic approaches also contributed significantly to recovery from violence-related trauma in teens, and incidences of such survivors committing violence also are low. Therefore, proactive strategies are the most effective methods of tackling teen violence due to their ripple effects. The approaches improve family relations, help in bringing up socially and morally upright individuals who can are less inclined to violence, which ultimately leads to reduced incidences of teen violence.
