While it is only a few years into the 21st century, several indicators show that there are different issues that will unfold in the near future, making it difficult to precisely define the century. To a large extent, it will be a time of discovery, social and political upheavals, and economic disruption. While technology and research have significantly been advanced to the extent that the future can be forecast, current trends in different environments and spaces indicate that advancement influencing an intricate connection between different systems, hence, the possibility of significantly disruptive events in this century. To a large extent, therefore, there is no certainty about the near future, and thus, it would be right to conclude that this will be another crisis of meaning.

Disruptive technology is one of the most critical aspects that define the 21st century. Advancement in technology is witnessed in healthcare, industrial production and transport, among others. While these are critical technological milestones, there is still so much that is being discovered that what has been achieved today is not sufficient to define the century. Cellphone use and technology uptake are increasing every day with such advancement, the power to innovate and imagine of products that have not been invented yet increases. As technology continues to be accessible to different demographics, it is undeniable that more than what has been witnessed or even imagined will be witnessed. This is true in the social, economic and scientific spheres.

In 2020, a novel virus disrupted how the world operates. This is a history repeating itself because deadly diseases have been witnessed in the history of mankind. Examples of such plagues include the Black Death and the plague of Athens. Just as scientists and firm producers imagine and research into the possibility of a viral outbreak that would bring the world to a standstill, the Covid-19 pandemic happened. To a large extent, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Given the significant interconnection in the world today, a contagious disease that emanates from the most remote area of the world today is likely to negatively affect the world in a notable way. Closely related to this, advancement in warfare as technology advances is most probable. As the effect of such viruses is witnessed, it is possible that some nation would take note and take of such scenarios as a research basis for the development of biological weapons. Viruses, for example, are part of fatal weapons that can be made part of warfare. These uncertainties make it hard for individuals to be certain about the course that the 21st century is likely to take.

With technological, political and economic advancement, the interdependence and interaction between different governments in the world has significantly increased. Different countries are, for example, are interdepended for imports, exports and other business relations. These aspects and others increase interactions between nations and also impact political negotiations. There have been, for example, business tension between the US and China in the near past. The political climate between the US and North Korea has also been tense for the last few years. With such changes, it is probable that political differences and changes are likely to continue. It is, therefore, impossible to have a singular streamlined definition of how the different events will turn out to be.

Social movements have also been on the rise in the near past. While these have been common as well in the 20th century, some are taking a new twist. Protests related to police use of excessive force, for example, were witnessed in different parts of the world when George Floyd was murdered. When Boko Haram kidnapped girls in a school in Nigeria, there were peaceful protests and agitations for the release of the girls by different people in the world. Social media has become an instrumental tool in enhancing such movements. Social movements are being undertaken differently, and therefore, with changes all over. It is definite that there will not be a singular way of defining what unfolds. A crisis of meaning is likely to be witnessed in all spheres of life. The 21st Story will probably be unique.
