Effective leadership is an essential attribute in the wake of a crisis in any given country. Iraqi is a nation that has been rocked by political upheavals and wars for many years. The top leadership of the country has used unorthodox means of ruling such as dictatorship and authoritarianism as witnessed during the era of Saddam Hussein. In the case study presented, Major General David Petraeus has a new challenge of reconstructing Iraq, a country that has undergone a period of war followed by the invasion by the United States. Through assessment, direction, and leadership, Petraeus must come up with solutions that will enable the reconstruction of an unstable Iraqi.

Assessment

Assessment is an essential part of solving a situation of a huge magnitude as witnessed in Iraq after the war. The war resulted in the looting that saw a city with over 1.7 million people live in shambles. Chaos was the order of the day in the town as the law enforcement bodies remained out of action for a while. The city further lacked amenities such as electricity, garbage collection, and running water. Many social and economic structures were evidently operational signifying the need for a change.

Direction

In light of these tragedies, Major General David Petraeus has the challenge of offering a sense of direction to emancipate the city from the realms of chaos and economic dysfunction. However, significant to note is that this would come with myriads of challenges given that the people that led the old Iraqi such as teachers, judges, political leaders, and university faculties amongst others had vanished. Another problem in the process of reconstruction was to build a society that believes in the spirit of democracy, something that was close to impossible.

Leadership

Therefore, through the three steps of leadership, assessment, and direction, Petraeus must come up with a long-lasting solution that takes into consideration the needs of the Iraqi people, without imposing ideas on them. Although everything remains uncertain, what is apparent is that he must come up with a decision that inspires respect from the people.
