1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of an employer conceding to union demands concerning wages and benefits in terms of productivity, retention, satisfaction, etc.? Is this trade-off worth it in your opinion? Why or why not?
Some types of unions are meant to enhance the accessibility of an organization to the society. One common union is the labor union; which is a form of society that addresses employees’ needs (OCCUPYTHEORY, 2015). There are numerous merits and demerits of an employer conceding to this society’s demands. The advantage of this trade union to managers is that it gives them a chance to offer employment depending on one’s specialization thus boosting the productivity of a business as well as ensuring satisfaction to the company (OCCUPYTHEORY, 2015). On the or hand, the demerit of this trade union is that it gives staff members a chance to secure a permanent job-a factor that can inconvenience a manager who wants to do away with underperforming personnel. This trade union is not worth to managers because it forces them to retain an underperforming staff as per the requirement of a labor union.

2. How do you think new and innovative workplace initiatives such as flex-time scheduling, telecommuting, and the 'Results Only Work Environment (ROWE)' model are affecting the nature of union-employer bargaining over things like schedules, compensation, and benefits?
Flex-time scheduling is a change of standard work program without transforming the percentage of time at work (University of New Hampshire, 2017). This power lies in the manager’s hands for staff members to enjoy it. It may affect the nature of a union-employer bargaining over things like schedules because personnel may not get much free time as they require for attending to their needs. Additionally, staff members may be underpaid since it is hard to record their working hours. Telecommuting is a substitute for work schedule whereby employees can work from home; and communicate with people from both internal as well as external parts of the organization (University of New Hampshire, 2017). In such a situation, trade unions may find it difficult to claim for proper staff compensation depending on a particular state's policy. On the other hand, Results Only Work Environment Schedule (ROWE) is results oriented (University of New Hampshire, 2017). Employees get paid based on their achievements. In such a situation, the bargaining power of things like compensation and benefits are complicated.
