The article, “How the 2016 presidential election will shape American identity,” was written by Viviane Seyranian and published in June 2016 by The Conversation barely two months to the U.S elections. The author, Seyranian, is a public figure and works as an assistant professor from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. The platform through which the article was published is a private and not-for-profit organization that promotes the online publication of articles from researchers and academicians. Generally, the article’s point of view stays neutral. However, priming, framing, and slant are relevant to the rhetoric uttered by the two presidential candidates and the effects it has on the voters. This is why the author explains how it will shape the American identity. Viviane Seyranian's main goal is to reach the American people, especially the voters. 

Ideology 

The author pushes for a specific ideology; the idea of her audience understanding and embracing the American identity. She elaborates how the identity of citizens comes down to how their leaders' points of view usually are valued. The identity is achieved through the use of the ‘we’ language, which is viewed by the representative group as a stepping stone for making their vision a reality. In the 2016 election, presidential candidates express their versions of what they think to be American. The twist is that people will embrace a version they are affiliated with. Although the ideology around the 2016 election is to amplify the spirit of embracing the American identity, the two candidates, Hillary Clinton's and Donald Trump's understanding of the ideology create a rift between the American people (Seyranian, 2016). The rift is an irony of the unity that the American identity is meant to achieve

Second, the platform where the article was published is funded by credible government institutions to foster civic education for the people. The relevance of the information is correct as it is an election year. Also, the source of the information and its accuracy were proven since it was from the events of the election campaign. Lastly, the purpose of the article was to shine a light on the events during the election and the repercussions that may follow.
