Benefits of a Local Diet

Implementing a local diet is beneficial since it is good for the environment. The food does not have to take long to get to the consumers, and it is not processed. Since the production is done in the normal manner, it helps in the reduction of emission of greenhouse gasses, thus improving the carbon print of the users. It also benefits local farmers.

Benefits to the Environment

Eating locally is beneficial to the environment since the production does not require excess chemicals such as fertilizers which destroy the surrounding. In addition, there is no greenhouse production thus the emission of greenhouse gases has been reduced (Clavin, 2011. The waste materials from the food can be used for different purposes such as feeding the animals and making manure for more production.

Conservation of Natural Resources

A local diet can conserve natural resources such as energy, water, land, and air since they are not required in excess or polluted. When producing locally, inorganic manure is mostly used, and it does not have chemicals which may be released to the environment or soil. In addition, there is no much effort put in production and energy is spared.

Potential Benefits to Human Health

Local foods are beneficial to the health of the people. The food is not processed which means it has not been added chemicals that affect human health. The food does not have chemicals which get in it during the production since non-chemical methods are used in production. Local foods improve the health of the people since nutrients are not destroyed.

Implementing in Daily Lifestyle

Implementing a local diet into daily lifestyle can be done by ensuring that one visits the local grocery stores after a period of every two days. Only the required amounts of local products will be bought. Since some will be destroyed easily, it is necessary to make sure that they are replaced to avoid food poisoning. The plan schedules should ensure that only local food will be taken.

Local Food Sources

The local food can be got from different sources. There are retail groceries that have food from the farms and then distribute to the local people. A person can also decide to identify the farmers in their area and the type of food they grow. They can then make a point of buying the food products directly from the farm. There are farmer’s markets also where farmers take their produce for distribution purposes.

Community Supported Agriculture

Community supported agriculture is the system which connects the consumers and the producers in a certain food system. The consumers are able to subscribe to the harvests of a certain farm, depending on what is being grown. The movement was founded in 1985 in America and has allowed people to access local food much easier.

Sustainable Methods of Dealing with Waste

There are various ways of dealing with food waste. It starts with planning for the food that one will be in need of. When shopping, it is necessary to have a list to avoid buying more than required (O'Brien, 2013). When one has excess food, it is advisable to donate to the poor. Freezing the products which can be frozen can help save them from destruction.

Encouraging Others to Eat Locally

I would encourage others to eat locally by telling them the benefits of eating local food. I will show how they will benefit the farmers and contribute to the welfare of society. Showing other people the community supported agriculture where they can purchase fresh food products will encourage them.
