Studying abroad is one of the things in my bucket list that I plan to accomplish in life. While education provides opportunities, one requires to achieve various goals in life, deciding to study abroad exposes one to a different environment and fosters interactions with people from different cultural backgrounds. As a business administration student, I am expected to be part of my community and contribute to its development economically and socially. Borough of Manhattan Community College offers an excellent program, and since I want to study Latin American & Caribbean Society, I will get the educational experience and exposure I require to achieve my goals.
As a black woman, I am passionate about the development of black people in the United States. The program relates to my professional goal because it addresses aspects of race, class, and gender, which are essential in addressing issues affecting the community. Studying Latin American & Caribbean society will enable me to understand different cultures; hence equipping me with different views necessary to promote development in the community. Moreover, to understand different cultures, I will engage with both local and international students as well as activists and community leaders and exchange ideas, which will broaden my world overview. It will also be an opportunity to meet people from different parts of the world.

Adapting to a new environment presents both opportunities and challenges. The first time I encountered a situation that required adaptation to a new environment was during summer when I went away from my hometown to work. I was working with new people with different values and beliefs, and I had to understand them to avoid conflicts. My adaptation strategy was to be friendly and learn from them, and at some point, I had to readjust my expectations because people have different personalities. Although it was challenging to adapt to the environment, it was a valuable learning opportunity.
Communication skills and accountability are essential elements when working in a group. While working in a group, I ensured the presence of effective communication and the contribution of all members of the group were considered. I encouraged active participation and elaboration of ideas for clarity. A group can have people with different personalities, and an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses improves efficiency because when allocating duties and responsibilities, these factors are considered. The experience I used is following up on tasks to ensure they have been accomplished in time as well as promoting transparency.
