Describe three instructional methods that can be used in a 60-minute teaching session.
Lecture: This is an instructional method that involves a single speaker talking to the target group.
Role plays: An instructional method where a leaner performs an act that is internalized by the other members of the community.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
Prepared visual materials: Use of media that displays visual images and slides (Bastable, 2014).
State a reason for choosing each method.
Role plays and lectures are inexpensive instructional methods, while visual and audio materials are resourceful when demonstrating procedures (Bastable, 2014). For instance, explaining to the community members on how to use an inhaler requires a lecture where the educator explains on how to use it. Role plays and visual aids on the other hand help the learners internalize the newly acquired information.
Describe benefits and limitations of each method.
Lecture
The two main benefits of a lecture include the ability to accommodate a large number of learners and the ability to present complicated topics in a structured manner. This case study particularly involves a large number of community residents. This method of teaching is however teacher-centered and therefore a passive learning method.
Role-plays
Role plays are learner-centered and enable the learners acquire the skills being demonstrated. It also ensures that there is active participation from the learners. However, some individuals may feel uncomfortable with role-playing and for an effective role-play, a learner may need to have additional skills and knowledge.
Visual aids
This is an instructional method that mainly benefits visual learners. Moreover, it is an effective method of demonstrating procedures. It is however a passive learning method and outcomes entirely depend on quality of the visual aid.
Ways of increasing effectiveness of teaching.
Increasing the effectiveness of teaching can be achieved through use of techniques such as think-pair-share. This transforms the teaching session from an active one to a passive one. Additionally, creative movement and eye-contact can improve teaching outcomes as they display confidence. Use of hand gesture also makes the presentation livelier (Bastable, 2014).
Evaluation of learning for the teaching program using teach-back method
Evaluation is an important part of any teaching program as it brings attention to the areas that the learners understood and those that they did not understand (Schaefer, Miller, Goldstein & Simmons, 2009). In this case study, the community residents will be individually asked to explain the various ways of ensuring safety when taking medication as well as actions that should be taken in case of severe adverse effects or drug accidents (“Institute for Healthcare Improvement”, 2012). Evaluation will be based on the percentage of learners who are able to demonstrate the various points effectively.
