The mission of the National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) is “To reduce the risk of occupational injury and illness by integrating decisions affecting safety and health in all stages of the design process” ( Manuele, 2008). One pro of the design process the ability to prevent and control job-related injuries, sicknesses, and fatalities. This is enabled through designing out or minimizing risks and hazards early in the process of design. The design principles prevent injuries and minimized the incidence of occupational illnesses, injuries and fatalities.

Prevention through design may be the facilitator in the prevention of injuries on workstations. While designing any operation and through the use of a wide range of risk analysis, work safety is at the forefront and this will ensure the avoidance of safety compromises ( Manuele, 2008) . The risk analysis process entails identifying the analysis parameters, identification of the hazards, consideration failure mods, assessment of the severity of impacts, duration and frequency of exposure, risk definition, prioritization of risks and emphasis on results.

Among the best and most cost-effective means of preventing occupational injuries, sickness and fatalities is by addressing hazards and reducing risks early in the design or redesign process. However, when the design is not taken into consideration early on, it may turn out to be a risk factor ( Manuele, 2008) . Poor design process results in increased injuries and fatalities in the workplace. Safety in design might present multiple challenges such as design inefficiencies, which could be detrimental in the workstation.

Prevention by design is all about the ability to identify and assess risks and analyze the hazards which come from the design process, and dealing with hazards to ensure that risks which could originate from occupational hazards are prevented and controlled in the early stages of the design or redesign process. Failure to conduct proper identification and analysis of occupational risks and hazards, the design approach will be inefficient, and could trigger more fatalities and injuries.
