Most adults have experienced various rites of passage from their childhood to adulthood. My initiation into adulthood commenced on my 16 th birthday when I was granted a car as a gift after passing my driving test. The primary challenge was passing the test. This achievement marked my initiation process into adulthood. My parents had conversations with me about how owning a car required me to be accountable. I had to adhere to road safety regulations and be liable for the safety of my passengers. Therefore, I was obliged to be a responsible driver to retain my driving privileges. The privilege implied that I had to run family errands. I was able to be punctual for my appointments especially, at the hospital and school. The simple tasks served as a gateway to instilling responsibility as I transition into adulthood and improved my vigilance and promptness.
Rites of passage entail cultural and contemporary aspects essential in one's transition from childhood to adulthood. I presume that the rites of passage's primary purpose are marking my transformation from childhood to adulthood. Besides, these rites serve as foundational values that initiated adults usually embrace. Human beings are social, and undergoing these passages reinforces their social boundaries. I believe that traditional rites of passage were obligatory, and individuals who failed to participate were considered outcasts. Contemporary society does not oblige one to participate in rites of passage; however, individuals who have not undergone initiation into adulthood might struggle to find their purpose in life. Adolescents have diverse social needs; the rites of passage should be inclusive and considerate to their divergent needs. I suppose that cultural custodians should devise an approach that emphasizes fundamental rites of passage beneficial to teenagers.
