Studying the letter written by James, the brother of Jesus and a leader of the church at a time when there was a lot of persecutions on the Christians presents a lot of challenges, anxieties, and fears. Personally, I am anxious to learn how strong Christians were that they still managed to live an ethical and moral life when faced with unending persecution. More importantly, it is interesting to learn how James could still encourage them not to give up but rather to have comfort in the religion at the time when the religion was the only reason for their sufferings. This is a course I am greatly looking forward to particularly because there are still places where religion is still being used to judge people and even be hated by different communities.
Personally, I would apply the wisdom of James in my own life by inculcating the power of prayer even at the time where everything seems to be going bad. As a Christian, I am encouraged by the book to always consult God’s wisdom whenever I am faced with life challenges. God is able to solve all our problems and that is the reason for our communication with Him. However, this is not a reason to be lazy as Christians and pray for God’s intervention at a time when Christians can come up and advocate for an end to their sufferings. It is my duty as a Christian to ask for God’s wisdom and use it to change the world and my situation to a better one. Our surroundings cannot be better just by praying, and we must be ready for actions that are aimed at making life better not only to Christians but to our neighbors as well.
