“Just as each of our bodies has several parts and each part has a separate function, so all of us, in union with Christ, form one body, and as parts of it we belong to each other." (Roman 12:4-12 English Standard Version)

The quote of Paul’s letter to the Romans tries to tell people to come together and build the community. In this regard, Paul urges people from different ethnic backgrounds to unite and become one to build a political, economic and social life that relates to the plan of God. The main message in Paul’s quote is community and participation. This is because a community shares a significant deal in people’s lives. It bounds people from the various scopes of life ranging from political, economic and cultural structures who express their shared lives in political, recreational and political associations and groups.

With regard to the call of participation, each individual in the community ought to take part in building the community. The community does not just happen but needs men and women to work collectively to develop it ( Byron, 2012 ). Each individual should use his or her gift to build the community. The network of different relationships reinforces the social fabric that is comprised of the basis of a true community of persons. It is therefore significant for every community member to participate in building the community for the common good. By so doing, the fruits of each member will offer an opportunity for relationship, encounter, and exchange.

The principles of participation are crucial in this election time because they enable individuals to avoid the risk of putting their priorities the wrong. Participation is also a moral obligation in the political life and it is important for each member of the community to participate according to his or her role and position to promote the common good in the community. Therefore, citizens should be encouraged to take an active role in public life which helps them to form a stable conscience for faithful citizenship. Conclusively, participation is a duty that should be fulfilled by all members of the community with a view for the common good.
