The Caribbean Sea is located in the Western Hemisphere, southeast of the Mexican gulf. It is bounded on the south by Venezuela, Panama, and Colombia. To the north, it is bounded by Jamaica, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, while Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Belize bound it to the west. The Lesser Antilles bound the Caribbean Sea to the East. The Caribbean Sea is about 2.75 million km2. It is believed that the Caribbean Sea was formed about 170 million years ago when a horizontal fracture occurred during the Mesozoic period and split Pangaea. The Caribbean Sea is mainly utilized for the transportation of people and goods. It is also a significant source of food for the surrounding region through fishing activities. Other human activities in the Caribbean Sea include tourism and offshore oil and gas operations. Like any other sea and ocean, the Caribbean Sea has been affected by massive pollutants littered into it. Some of these pollutants include plastic, and industrial, and domestic waste. A report by the World Bank revealed that more than 320,000 tons of plastic waste in the region surrounding the Caribbean Sea is not collected each year. A considerable part of this waste ends up in the ocean, disrupting marine life, and posing health risks to humans (Chapoy, 2019). One intervention measure that has been put in place to address pollution is the mutual agreement of the territories and countries surrounding the Caribbean Sea to take measures that will gradually reduce the pollution of the sea. According to Diez (2019), all the parties have agreed to protect and preserve the sea's part, which falls under their jurisdiction. Also, authorities have increased efforts to create awareness about the adverse effects of dumping domestic waste into the ocean.
