The 14 th Amendments grants everyone born and acclimatized in the United States the right to become a U.S citizen and belong to the specific state under which they were born ( Cohen, 2011 ). Recently, a debate has exacerbated whether this Amendment should be rewritten or not and has spiked a lot of attention from every corner of the globe. According to the New York Times daily magazine, some conservatives tried to make an argument that the 14 th Amendment was meant to apply to both legal permanent residents and citizens and not immigrants ( Davis, 2018 ). My opinion strongly deters these sentiments and claims that have become a heated debate on whether the Amendment should be reworded or not. The Amendment should not be rephrased since it protects and enshrines democratic principles and brings forth equality and due process to every citizen.

Birthright citizenship should not be brought to an alt since the debate has been empowered by strong politics surrounding the issue. According to President Trump's administration, rewording the 14 th Amendment is purposely meant to dissuade legal immigrants from misappropriating enjoying public benefits by establishing a federal rule ( Davis, 2018) . Despite being non-constitutional, such an exclusive and executive order would call for racist fears at a time when the country requires maximum inclusivity and unification. The dispatch message in the 14 th Amendment fosters equality amongst all individuals born in the country. It does not promote favoritism amongst different groups in the U.S. Applying the principle of the 14 th Amendment to all immigrant children is a matter of using common sense and promoting equality amongst all citizens ( Forner, 2018 ). The ambiguity of the Amendment should instead be embraced in all dimensions, and instead, shift the focus to fulfilling the amendments’ unfulfilled promises.
