Part 1
After studying two of the readings and watching two of the video clips, I made deliberate efforts towards ironing out suitable, didactic advice to youth. The readings chosen were Mark Twain, Advice to Youth , (637) and My Fall into Knowledge by Reg Saner. The video clips chosen were Michael James Haley, The challenge of ethical leadership and Rodger Walsh, What is ethics, and what is an ethical life ? Bearing in mind that it is in one’s youthful years that advice best take root, I borrowed different concepts that I found suitable for the advising the youth.
Firstly, it is vital to uphold the highest standards of ethics as it promises the best outcomes in social and career spheres. Having a strong ethical standing underlines having a justifiable intentional motivation behind every action and behavior. A justifiable ethical action aims at improving the welfare of everyone with the inclusion of oneself. Every decision has to be motivated by an ethical basis, and to some extent, allowing discussions to ensure that actions result in the best outcomes for everyone. It dawns that regardless of the significance of duties bestowed upon an individual, it is critical to perform them diligently and with utmost responsibility.

Secondly, it is imperative to cultivate moral integrity. As Mark Twain points out, lying eventually results in undesirable consequences and erodes one’s moral purity. Numerous people have suffered massive consequences for trying to delude others and swindle them of their money. Michael James provides that acts of dishonesty results in wreckage of great companies, with the example of Enron Corporation. The entire academic journey can be ruined by acts of dishonesty, landing one behind bars and ruining their career altogether. Moral integrity goes to the extent of raising criticism on questionable or indefensible values as seen in the case of Roy Disney, who orchestrated the change in leadership that propelled the company to great heights.
Thirdly, the youth need to pay attention on the decisions they make. The reading on My Fall into Knowledge by Reg Saner details the actuality of the lives of human beings on earth, who constantly shape the quality of their lives. Human beings have the ability to choose right or wrong and are not inherently evil. Through the various choices on virtues or vices, human beings freely dictate their path on earth and the consequences of their actions. In this regard, the youth need to be careful on how make choices, including handling firearms. Mark twain indicates that reckless handling of firearms by the youth has resulted in immense suffering and sorrow. Therefore, the importance of paying attention to decisions and choices cannot be overemphasized.
Part 2
The ethical scenario took place while on duty in Iraq. During the mission, we were conducting a search in one of the buildings where we came across a large sum of money. There was no accountability for the money and no way of being tracked to anyone. This provided us with an opportunity to decide whether to take it and share it amongst ourselves or to turn it in. The scenario had no aspects of cultural differences involved but it strongly tested our moral integrity and ethical standing. On the one hand, taking the money would provide some free money for us. On the other hand, turning in the money would indicate a strong ethical standing, and ensure that we had nothing to hide. Upon considering the options, we did the right thing, accounted for every last dollar and turned it in. This resolved the situation and gained the respect and admiration of everyone. Since accountability formed the basis of our decision, it served as the best ethical decision.
