The healthcare sector is among the key industries where management has to go hand in hand with leadership. The sector has an exponentially high number of instances where a systems failure will have catastrophic outcomes, including fatalities where there is no chance for do-overs (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018). It is inter alia on this basis that advertisements for leadership positions in the healthcare sector are articulate and highly particularized. The adverts may not per se list the management skills and characteristics necessary to carry out the job. However, they ensure that potential applicants have an idea about what the job entails in order to decipher what skills and prerequisites are needed. In the instant essay, an analysis will be made about an advertisement on the Glassdoor website for the position of Healthcare Administrator at Physicians Endoscopy in New York City. The particulars outlined in the advertisement with regard to the nature of the organization and the obligations of the Healthcare Administrator indicate the management skills and characteristics needed.

Keywords that Represent a Management Skill or Characteristic

The advertisement begins by explaining that the administrator will be working in an endoscopy Ambulatory surgery center (ASC), a definitive reference to the time management skills. Patients who prefer to be attended to at an ASC want to have definite schedules that will not be changed. The administrator of such a place must thus be a good time manager. The first characteristics of the center are that it has 16 physicians (Glassdoor, 2018). In a hospital setting, physicians are generally team leaders with several other team members such as technicians and nurses, in an ASC setting. The 16 physicians then have only 5 operations rooms to work in. An applicant thus needs to know that there will be a great need for strategizing, planning, and also dispute resolution when the sharing of amenities leads to conflicts. Recruitment, supervision, and evaluation are indicated as part of the job description, all of which call for competence in management skills and an understanding of management theories. The administrator will also play the role of quality assurance which includes patient’s satisfaction, an obligation that will need discipline and ability to strategize (Glassdoor, 2018). Finally, the administrator will have financial oversight, an obligation that requires personal discipline.

Characteristics Found in a Leader

Traits of a Leader

Good leadership has a lot to do with communication. A good leader must be a great communicator with the ability to say the right thing, at the right time, in the right place, and in the right way. Good communication begins with charisma, a character trait that makes followers desire to follow the leader (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018). Honesty is another key trait of a good leader, as a good leader must have the full trust of the followers. Another communication skill for a good leader is a good sense of humor in order to break the ice in complicated conversations. Confidence is another critical trait of a leader and it ought to be strong enough to be detected by the followers. Ability to delegate is another critical leadership trait, so is creativity which elicits an ability to inspire innovation. Empathy is also necessary as a leader is also akin to a parental figure. A good leader motivates followers to give their best in meeting the objectives of the organization, as opposed to compelling the followers to do it (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018).

How leadership Traits Contribute to Effectiveness in a Management Position

Management is more about systems, processes, rules, and regulations which in most cases will seem stringent, extreme, and harsh. The leadership trait of good communication skills will thus be invaluable for the manager. The manager has to caution those who are wrong and also instill discipline, both of which can be counterproductive without good communication skills (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018). For example, a compliment given in private will have a diminished impact while a rebuke given in public will create disenchantment. A manager will thus benefit from a leaders ability to say the right thing, at the right time, place and way. A manager will also benefit from the leadership trait of honesty since staff members must be able to take the manager seriously all the time. Finally, management is all about delegation and sharing out duties hence a manager will benefit from that leadership trait too.

The Relationship between Personal Characteristics and Effective Leadership

Charisma has been defined as a personal characteristic that cannot be taught in class, yet is invaluable for effective leadership. Without an ability to inspire followers, leadership competence based on theory will be wasted (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018). It is perhaps because of the concept of charisma that it is sometimes argued that leaders are born. Honesty is also a personal characteristic as it involves telling even an inconvenient truth. A leader who tells lies will eventually lose followers no matter how competent they are in other areas. Empathy is also personal characteristics that are critical for leadership as a leader needs to be able to identify with the plight of the followers so as to be effective (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018). The above traits are personal in nature but go a long way in enabling effectiveness in leadership.

Conclusion

Management is a critical trait when it comes to administration in a healthcare institution but it must be supported by leadership traits. Management focuses more on systems, procedures, and ways of doing things. However, it also requires dealing with actual people on a regular basis. The aspect of management that involves dealing with people is the one that makes leadership traits invaluable for a manager. By combining management characteristics and leadership traits, an excellent healthcare administrator will be established.
