There is confusion especially in the contemporary world on the specific role of the church as well as Christians. From ancient time, the church has been charged with the role of preaching the gospel to people to make them embrace moral standards that are generally accepted by the society. It is however not clear whether modern Christians are living according to the stipulated mandate. As much as most churches continue to preach the gospel to the congregation, some critics say that Christians are unable to practice what they preach (Goheen & Bartholomew, 2008). It is argued that some believers are practicing Christianity as a private affair when they are supposed to change most members of the public who need it most.

Colson and Pearcey (2004) point out that there was a time in the US when most people embraced readily all aspects of modernity. They desired to live a life that was not defined by any constraints. To state simply, they wanted to get the freedom to do whatever they wished. Nonetheless, they realized that the same freedom created chaos and disorder. As a result, most people nowadays want to go back to the old system that is guided by morals. In fact, Colson and Pearcey posit that the crime levels among teenagers, as well as other social vices have significantly reduced. However, the two authors say that people are now looking for answers for some of the issues they are confronted with. On the contrary, the church has decided to stay aloof from people seeking those answers. Christians still do not realize that the appropriate time has come for them to create a positive impact and help answer those questions. Additionally, some believers cannot be able to provide answers to questions posed by young children or even defend their faith.

From the textbooks, I have learned new aspects that I had not thought of before. The world is changing at a first pace and if Christians are not careful, they may not catch up. Most of the time the church is quick to condemn social vices but does not provide a solution to deal with the social ills. Even when some people decide to reform, the church still remains suspicious, hence does not provide the consolation that is dire. In light of all these, one may be tempted to ask, what is the real purpose of the church? Is it to help forge solutions or criticize? Most of the time, prisons are built to help reform those individuals who may be charged with going against various stipulated ideals. Despite being charged with such a crucial responsibility, the prison guards most of the time subject prisoners to cruel treatment, a situation that invalidates their mandate. A lot of the time prisoners are ready to reform and their only needs are people who can rejuvenate them with hope and make them turn away from their past behavior. What most prison authorities do is crash the hope of most prisoners when they need it most.

Summarily, the church has a weighty responsibility currently. Most people who have attempted to dispute the existence of God are abandoning their ideas and instead seeking to transform. The church has to rise up to the task and receive such people. It would be meaningless for people to call themselves Christians when they cannot receive deviants who have decided to reform. The gospel is supposed to be preached to everyone and not only a select few. As much as people in church preach, they must be ready to put the gospel into practice as a sign of believing fully in what they teach. They must also be ready to defend their faith when put to task.
