In philosophy, there is the concept of freedom and fate. These two concepts vary depending on the cultural beliefs of a given community. This article entails a discussion on the way the culture of the Yoruba people in Nigeria shapes up their fate, freedom, and most importantly their destiny as per their beliefs.

One may be prompted to ask where human freedom and fate may reside. Also, this stimulates the idea of whether the life of an individual is predetermined by fate. As can be seen, the predetermination of life in Yoruba culture is as a result of an inability to empirically justify any occurrence in an individual’s life given happening thus it is meant for satisfaction in an individual. Fate is a concept which can be used to mean a connection of the life of man to the gods ( Adeniyi, 2015). Looking at Ifa from the video, it is realized that the Yoruba people believe in the existence of God which is the reason behind their existence. According to the concept of Ifa, it is seen as a link between human beings and divinity. In addition, Ifa portrays the practice and way of life especially inclined to the duty of nature as well as the true aspects of God (Bata, 2015). Ifa is critical to the fate and destiny of human beings according to the Yoruba people as it is linked to the connectedness with God. Through Orishe, God manifests His powers through the forces of nature.

It can be appropriately concluded that according to the Yoruba people, freedom, fate, and destiny of human beings is within the control of the gods. Thus, it is upon human beings especially the Yoruba people to connect to God through ancestors and Orishe to ensure they succeed and have a good fate.
