It is a challenge, even for historians, to separate historical issues from present day issues. As the article puts it, history shapes our present and future. The Confederate battle flag is a symbol of history in the United States, particularly among White Southerners. This flag has been one of the sources of controversies over the years. The 2015 attack on a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, by a white supremacist definitely evoked sensitive memories among the public. It is no wonder that both Republicans and Democrats gathered soon after the attack to push for the removal of the flag from the Columbian State House. Racism and slavery are some of labels pinned on the flag and this attack was seen to propagate the vices.

Therefore, it is safe to conclude that both historical views and present-day issues have amalgamated to form the current debate. Something to note is that a lot of the facts have been eroded over time concerning the Confederate flag. This has led to sometimes vague opinions that are based on a limited understanding of the genesis of it all. It is paramount to be able to first understand the facts before engaging in any discussions in order to avoid one-sided conclusions that may be detrimental to the society.
