What is the connection between behavior and health and what can community/public health nurses (C/PHN) do about this?

There is a correlation between behavior and health, albeit a complex one. The loss of social control in the sense that one has no control over the environment, for instance, when an individual loses his or her job or source of income, leads to an increase in stress levels. It is imperative to note that a small level of stress is right since it motivates the individual to work harder and achieve their objectives in life. Nevertheless, a prolonged level of stress, which happens when one has no means or resources to change their situation, is detrimental to one’s health ( Kulig, 2017) . It causes high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart disease, and a faster rate of aging.

What can community/public health nurses (C/PHN) do about the connection between behavior and health?

In handling stress, community nurses should be organized, meaning that they should manage their time well. For instance, reporting to work early and review their days scheduled is helpful in that regard. Seeking advice on how to deal with stress is helpful. Working on better communication with colleagues, other professionals, family members, and patients will help in dealing with stress ( Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014) . Finally, staying positive by focusing on the good part of life, in general, is beneficial.

What can the C/PHN do in a time of disaster?

In times of disaster, a community nurse should have the necessary experience for mitigation, response, preparedness, and recovery ( Kulig, 2017) . Public nurses should strive to attain individual competencies that will enable collaboration with others and contribute to emergency response and preparedness.

What key facts from the video caught your attention?

The part of the video that caught my attention is the fact that high-stress communities, particularly the ones where people have no means to change their lives. The fact that community members are prone to certain diseases and conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity is quite helpful and will, undoubtedly, help my practice. Learning how to handle such individuals is beneficial to my future practice.

How does what you see in the video compare to what you're learning with your community assessment?

The assertions by the video are reminiscent of the provisions of the classwork. In essence, community assessment entails various aspects of that community, such as their social and economic practices and capabilities, since such is linked to their health. Poor neighborhoods tend to be stressed and, therefore, have more health complications than the ones mentioned.
